COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah was picked second in the 2006 Mountain West Conference preseason women's soccer poll released today.
In a vote by the league's coaches, Utah received three of the eight first-place votes and had 44 points. The Utes won the 2005 regular season title. BYU received four first-place votes and 46 points overall to capture the top spot in the poll.
San Diego State was picked to finish third with 35 points, while also tallying one first-place vote. Last year's tournament champion, UNLV, was picked fourth (32 points), while New Mexico was fifth (25 points), TCU was sixth (19 points), Wyoming was seventh (16 points), and Air Force was eighth (7 points).
Utah, BYU and UNLV all represented the MWC in the NCAA Tournament in 2005, tying the highest number of MWC teams to play in the postseason.
Utah returns 18 letterwinners and nine starters, including the 2005 MWC offensive and defensive players of the year in Amanda Feigt and Melissa Wayman, respectively. The Utes went 14-7-1 overall last season and 6-0-1 in conference play. BYU finished with 15-2-4 last season, while San Diego State welcomes nine starters back. The 2006 MWC Women's Soccer Championship will take place on the University of Utah campus, Nov. 1-4.
Utah will host a pre-season scrimmage against Utah Valley State on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Ute Field. Admission to the match will be free.
