No. 18 Volleyball Wins Eighth Straight

LAS VEGAS - It may have not been the usual three-game sweep but it was still a key win over a conference rival as the University of Utah volleyball team improved to 10-2, 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference, with a 3-1 win over the pesky UNLV Rebels tonight.
Game scores tonight were 30-16, 32-34, 30-28 and 30-23 as UNLV falls to 9-4 and to 1-1 in league play. The win marks the eighth straight victory for the Utes.
"We won the first game easy but the rest of the match was a huge battle," said Launiere of the four-game win. "UNLV leads the league in digs and we found out why tonight. A lot of the balls that usually fell for us in the past didn't tonight. The Rebels got to them and kept the rally going.
"Tonight's win was a complete team effort. There were a lot of long rallies tonight and a lot different people stepped up at different times during the match to help us get the win. Overall, we played well. We gutted it out tonight."
The Utes held the .244-.129 edge in hitting. Airial Salvo led the way with her eighth double-double of the season. She had 17 kills and a match-high 21 digs. She wasn't the only Ute with a double-double as Sydney Anderson turned the deed with a 33-assist, 11-dig effort.
Also helping out on the attack was Kathryn Lovell (13 kills), Lori Baird (12) and Emillie Toone (10). Toone nearly had a double-double as she finished the match with eight total blocks.
Anderson played in the first three games and had 33 assists to lead all players. Shannon Krug came on to set in the last two games, dishing out 20 assists. She also had seven digs and two blocks.
The visitors held the 15.5-9 lead in team blocks. It was Toone who led the team in blocking but also saw some backing from Baird and Whitney Webb. They both helped out with seven blocks apiece.
Salvo led the team in digs as Anderson, Webb and Connie Dangerfield also helped out with 11 each. UNLV did hold the edge in digs, though, 85-79.
Leading the Rebels was Maria Aladjova and her 20 kills. Also leading the home team was Melody Nua (32 assists) and Jada Walker (18 digs) while two Rebels had four blocks apiece.
Utah has a rare Friday evening off before returning to the court on Saturday, Sept. 23. They play at San Diego State with first serve set for 1 p.m. (PDT).
