PROVO, Utah - The No. 18-ranked University of Utah volleyball team escaped Cougar Country with an upset victory as it upended No. 16-ranked Brigham Young here tonight, 3-1. It is Utah's third straight win over its in-state rival.
Game scores were 30-24, 30-28, 21-30 and 30-18. With the victory Utah runs its winning streak out to 10 matches and it improves to 12-2 on the year. It also remains perfect in Mountain West Conference action as it is now 5-0 in league play. The loss drops the Cougars to 12-2 overall and to 4-1 in loop action.
Kathryn Lovell led the four-pronged attack in tying for match-high honors with 18 kills. Whitney Webb's arm was equally as dangerous tonight as she put down 17 kills on a team-best .382 hitting. Airial Salvo tallied 15 kills while Lori Baird finished with 11.
Freshman setter Sydney Anderson had a tremendous outing tonight. Her line of 57 assists, 13 digs and .750 hitting (six kills, eight attacks, no errors) is only rivaled by the fact that she guided the team to an impressive .315 hitting percentage.
Utah's defense held the 10.5-7 edge in team blocks and stifled the Cougar offense as they hit a meager .195 on the night. Leading the defense was Baird and her six total blocks. Webb helped out with five blocks while Salvo and Emillie Toone totaled three each.
From the back row, it was Connie Dangerfield who led the Utes as she recorded her first 20-dig match of the season. Salvo and Anderson each had a double-double with 12 and 13 digs, respectively.
Leading the BYU Cougars were Chelsea Goodman (18 kills and 15 digs), Jenna Judkins (54 assists) and Kim Wilson (four blocks). Rachel Dyer led all hitters with a .391 average.
It's a short rest for the Utes who return to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Utah takes a step out of conference play to take on Idaho State in a non-league match. First serve in Pocatello, Idaho, is set for 6 p.m.
