Utah's Mason and Wayman Named NSCAA Scholar All-Americans

SALT LAKE CITY - Ashley Mason and Melissa Wayman of the Utah women's soccer team have been named to the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America team. Kiley Jones, Katie Battazzo and Hailey Marsh joined them as all-West Region Scholar Athletes.
Mason was one of 12 players to be named to the Scholar All-America first team. The senior goalkeeper from Sunnyvale, Calif., has a 3.67 GPA in exercise and sport science.
Mason started 21 games in goal for the Utes, recording a .90 goals against average with 76 saves and 19 goals allowed. She also posted seven complete-game shutouts and contributed to three others. She finished her career as Utah's all-time leader in goals against average (.732) and shutouts (28.8).
Wayman, a senior defender, was a third team selection. The native of West Valley City, Utah, has a 3.64 GPA in exercise and sport science.
Wayman started all 22 games and was a vital contributor to the Utes' defense that surrendered only 19 goals and posted 11 shutouts. Utah also didn't allow a goal in conference play.
Mason, Wayman and Jones were honored as NSCAA/adidas first team all-West Region Scholar-Athletes. Jones, a junior midfielder from San Clemente, Calif., is majoring in communication.
Battazzo and Marsh were named third team all-West Region Scholar-Athletes. Battazzo is a junior defender from Boise, Idaho, majoring in environmental studies. Marsh is a senior forward from Denver, Colo., majoring in communication.
Both Mason and Wayman made the NSCAA Scholar All-America team for the first time. Two other Utes have made the team previously. Maren Harper was selected to the second team in 2002 and Amber Brower made the first team in 2003.
