SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team had plenty of chances to score in its match with New Mexico Sunday afternoon at Ute Field. Unfortunately for the Utes, they were unable to convert any of those chances and played the Lobos to a scoreless draw.
Utah (10-2-4, 2-0-2 MWC) took 29 shots to just 10 for New Mexico (7-4-3, 1-2-1 MWC). The Utes out-shot the Lobos 9-2 in the first half.
"We had a lot of chances early and simply didn't take advantage of them," Utah head coach Rich Manning said. "New Mexico is a team that plays real well defensively. We had a few good chances, but couldn't capitalize."
In the second half, Utah continued to apply pressure. Five of Utah's 14 second-half shots came in the final five minutes of regulation, including two off corner kicks in the final 30 seconds. But New Mexico goalkeeper Shannon Adragna, who made 13 saves in the contest, was able to keep the ball out of the net and force the extra periods.
In the first overtime, New Mexico had two early scoring chances, but couldn't capitalize. Utah then got three chances of its own late in the period. Erin Dalley (Fr., Centerville, Utah) had the best look, just missing on a header off a corner kick with 10 seconds remaining.
Midway through the second overtime, Melissa Crespo (Sr., Milpitas, Calif.) and Lauren Hair (Fr., Alpine, Utah) each had good looks at the net. But Adragna came through for the Lobos again. As time wound down, Utah made one last push. With less than 10 seconds remaining, Adele Letro (Jr., Davis, Calif.) got free just inside the 18 on the left side. She fired a left-footed shot with three seconds on the clock, but her attempt sailed just high as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
Goalkeeper Lynzee Lee (Soph., Kalispell, Mont.) made five saves for Utah, including a handful of athletic plays, to keep New Mexico off the scoreboard.
"We played solid today and had a lot of great chances, but just couldn't put it away," Lee said. "Being a goalleeper, you have to have your head in the game at all times or else the next thing you know they can be running a break right at you."
Utah will be in action again Friday in Fort Worth, Texas, when they travel for a match with TCU. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CDT.
