Utah Drops Close Contest to BYU, 3-0

PROVO, Utah - Despite a .264 team hitting percentage and close scores in all three games, the Utah women's volleyball team fell to BYU, 3-0, in Provo for the second Deseret First Duel volleyball contest of the season.
Whitney Webb led the Utes with 13 kills on the night, while Lori Baird was also in double figures with 11 kills. She had a team-best .360 hitting percentage. Kathryn Haynie tallied nine kills and two aces with 10 digs.
"We competed hard," head coach Beth Launiere said. "We didn't give up. This has been the story of our season - we played hard and didn't give up. We had some of our best offensive numbers tonight, but they had their offense going too. Usually we hold teams better than that."
Tied 9-9 in game one, BYU went on a 7-1 run to take a 16-10 lead, giving the Cougars control of the game. Although the two teams matched each other for the remainder of the game, with Utah coming within two points several times, BYU was able to take the 30-27 win. Baird had five kills in the opening game for the Utes.
In game two, BYU led by as many as six points through the middle part of the game before Utah rallied to tie the game late. Down 23-19, the Utes reeled off four-straight points for a 23-23 tie. Webb had two kills in the run and was part of a triple-block with Kate Robison and Chelsey Sandberg for the tying point. However, BYU narrowly outscored Utah 7-4 the remainder of the way to win 30-27.
Game three was also highly contested, with the two teams battling in the early points. With Utah down 17-16, BYU went on a 5-0 run to take a 21-16 lead. Although Utah made a late run to come within three points, BYU held on to take the 30-25 win.
Sandberg led Utah with six blocks while Keisha Fisher had 26 assists. The Utes held the blocking advantage 9.5 to 7.5.
BYU was led by Chelsea Goodman's 17 kills, while Rachel Dyer was also in double figures with 14 kills. Erica Lott tallied 12 digs and Ashton Hansen had a team-high four blocks. Amy Schlauder had 48 assists.
With the win, which was worth three points, BYU ties Utah in the Deseret First Duel standings, 6-6.
The Utes have their final home series of the season next weekend, beginning with No. 25 UNLV on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
