We left the beautiful town of Ravenna to head to our next destination Perugia, Italy It was a two and a half hour drive up and down the beautiful slopes of Italy. To our surprise we saw some snow. It felt like we were back in Utah.
When we reached Perugia, we got to go site seeing for a couple hours and it was really fun. When walking to get into the town, we got to go up through a castle like structure. We had to go up four flights, but good thing they had escalators. We had to get going on the site seeing, because all the stores closed at one. We saw a lot of really old buildings that looked like they were a billion years old. It was extremely cold, especially when we ate our gelato. We ate some lunch, a couple girls tried Perugia's hot dogs and others stuck with the pizza. We got back to the bus and traveled a little bit to get to the gym.
We reached the gym and played the B1 team Marsciano. We ended up falling to them 3-2. It was a tough battle against more experienced Italian players. In fact, one of their players was 32 years old and has previously played for 11 years in the A1 Italian league (that's the highest league in Italy). She is still really really good and we could tell she was the leader on their team and the younger girls really looked up to her and were learning from her. The way matches are played are a little different than the USA in that they play with international volleyball rules. Some differences are: liberos can't serve which results in middle blockers serving and playing defense for one rotation, there are only six subs, the sub can only go in once, there are automatic time outs when the first team reaches 8 and 16, and we line up on the sideline instead of the end line. The international experience we have gained over here in Europe is definitely going to help us this spring and coming fall.
I must say Ciao Ciao because we are on our way to the beautiful capitol of Italy, Roma to finish out our tour. Our volleyball experience is now over, but what we have learned is invaluable and we look forward to spending two days in Rome. G2G.
