Today was an amazing way to spend our last day in Europe. Our day began bright and early at 7 a.m. when we got up and left our hotel for the Vatican City. It happened to be raining while we stood in line to get into the Vatican Museums for a few hours and entertained ourselves by playing telephone, listening to our IPod's, and the best part was acting like the line-cutting police when people tried to cut in front of our big group after we were waiting for about an hour and a half. Once inside the Vatican Museums we were able to see the breathtaking architecture and art inside. It was an amazing experience. None of us had ever been into the Vatican Museums so we were all completely blown away by the artifacts from the past.
The Sistine Chapel was by far the highlight of the Museum. Chelsey, Hilary, Lacey, Stephanie and Whitney, just sat on a bench for 30 minutes in awe of the magnificence of Michelangelo's work. All of the portraits seemed as though they were going to fall from the ceiling because they seemed like actual 3-D figures. We could not believe that something so spectacular and grand was painted by one man and his brush.
While most of us were in the Museum other's stumbled upon a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Holiest man in Catholicism, the Pope Benedict XVI. At St. Peter's Square there was a program with a choir and procession and the Pope made an appearance. Airial, Heather, Emillie, and Sydney got within a few yards of him. Heather got up on Airial's shoulders to get a good picture of him.
From St. Peter's Square, most of us went off in smaller groups and shopped the streets of Rome. We are so exhausted from this past week because we have been on buses, trains and on our feet for the past week. We are ready to go home and share more stories with you and would not trade this experience for the world. We spent so much time together and have all created bonds with everyone on the team. We gained valuable experiences on the court as well from playing against great professional teams. We will use all the lessons we have learned on the court during the fall season. Ciao from Italy and see you back home in Salt Lake City!
