SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah soccer team completed its spring season in Las Vegas on April 14th with modified games with UNLV and UCLA. The Utes fell to UNLV, 1-0, and defeated UCLA, 2-0.
The Utes fell to conference-rival UNLV in a morning match that was a pre-arranged 70 minutes long. As usual with these two teams, the game was a defensive struggle without many clear chances. Utah's best chance was early in the first half as Katy Reineke had a laser-like free kick from 30 yards pushed over the crossbar. The Rebels scored on a corner kick with five minutes remaining to earn the victory. The Utah defense, rebuilding after graduating four senior starters last fall, continued to gain valuable experience. Goalkeeper Emalee Rogers, coming off knee surgery last summer, shutout UNLV in the first half. And Amy Edman patrolled the net in the second half for the Utes.
In the second match, a 60-minute affair, the Utes defeated UCLA. Utah played with a good rhythm throughout. Kelly Isleib opened the scoring in the first half with a 20-yard free kick. The sophomore bent the ball around the Bruin wall and into the net. And junior forward Chelsea Card closed the deal in the final minutes with her first goal of the spring. Goalkeeper Lynzee Lee went the distance to get the shutout.
The Utes finished the spring season with a 1-4-1 record against a formidable schedule that included five teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season (Denver, USC, BYU, UNLV, UCLA) and another (Cal State Northridge) from the tough Big West Conference.
Utah head coach Rich Manning was encouraged by what he saw as the team heads into the summer. "In my five years here, this is the toughest test that we've put our team through," he said. "We trained hard, conditioned hard and played six very good teams. It was great to see the players respond to the demands that we put on them. Some of them dove in and chewed it up. Others slowly gained some mental toughness about it. But, they all learned and grew from the experience. We probably did too much to allow us to play our best in the games, but I think we will see that pay off next season."
"Kiley Jones was spectacularly consistent in the midfield as always and was probably our best player in the spring," Manning continued. "She is positioned to have a great senior year in the fall. I was also pleased that we got four basically new defenders some quality time together. Emily Campbell, Jena Roberts and Katy Reineke made good strides. And it was really good to get Amanda Sanchez back in the center of the defense after being injured all last fall. Finally, I would highlight the fact that we have three young goalkeepers trying to replace Ashley Mason. Emalee Rogers, Amy Edman and Lynzee Lee all got some valuable experience."
The Utes will head off for summer vacation after finishing final exams and papers this week. They will reconvene on August 12th to begin preseason training. The Ute open their 2007 schedule Friday, Aug. 31 against the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz. The first home game will be Friday, Sept. 14 against Idaho State at 7:30 p.m. at Ute Soccer Field.
