The Utah women's volleyball team began practice last week for the fall campaign. This week they travel to St. George to continue training. Senior Kate Robison talked about her first week with UtahUtes.com.
This past week we started the 2007 season and so far I am so excited! The first day was just meetings and physicals, but it was nice to get to meet all the incoming players. It was the first time I had met some of them! Early on Wednesday we started off by running our sprint test. The team was able to show how dedicated we were to working out over the summer and making sure that we came into this season in shape! Since I am a senior it is refreshing to say that was the last sprint test I will have to run!!!!
We had two practices a day on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. With each practice we got better and started to play more together and began to just have fun playing volleyball with each other! Each of the practices we have taken a different skill and broken it down, concentrating on the basics so that we can move on from there. We have worked on passing, blocking, hitting, serving, and my personal favorite, floor defense!! (It really is my favorite, I'm not being sarcastic). I think most of the team made it without too many bruises or floor burns!
Saturday morning we had our scrimmage for family and friends to come watch. It was exciting to play a real 6-on-6 game in front of a small crowd. It was great to have the support from the people there! I think everyone's favorite part of the past week (especially for the freshman) has been the amazingly cold and refreshing ice baths that we get to take after each practice!!! We find very interesting ways of entertaining ourselves and passing the time. We sing, we take pictures and we do whatever it takes to not think about how cold it is! Luckily, if they are cold enough we go numb pretty fast and then it's not so bad!
The other favorite pasttime of our team which we have kept up is dancing!! Even if our legs are a little tired and sore after practice we have a little bit of energy for a couple crazy dance moves! We always enjoy our time in the locker room dancing!!
So far this pre-season has been amazing and I am so excited to see where this team is going to be with another week of practice. I am so excited for St. George and the fun times we are going to have. We will be able to concentrate even more on being a team and everybody getting to know each other!!!
