SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - After opening the season at the AVCA Showcase, the Utes travel to No. 17 Purdue for the Mortar Board Purdue Premier. Utah starts the tournament against North Carolina on Friday, Aug. 31, before taking on Dayton and Purdue on Saturday, Sept. 1.
Recapping the AVCA Showcase
Utah went 0-2 at the AVCA Showcase, falling 3-0 to No. 5 UCLA and dropping a five-game thriller to Tennessee, 3-2, in its second match.
Against UCLA, the Utes held the Bruins to within a few points through most of the three games. Junior Kathryn Haynie had 11 kills, while Connie Dangerfield tallied 21 digs and freshman Keisha Fisher, who made her first start for the Utes, had 34 assists and 17 digs.
Led by senior Whitney Webb, who set a new career high with 21 kills, Tennessee pulled away in the final points of game five to win, 18-16. Dangerfield, who had 22 digs against the Lady Vols, was named to the all-tournament team.
Scouting Purdue
No. 17 Purdue began its season with a 2-1 record, playing at the Duke Invitational. The Boilermakers defeated Winthrop (3-1) and East Carolina (3-0) before falling to No. 18 Duke (3-1) in their final game of the tournament.
Libero Anne Mastandrea, who averaged 7.55 dpg during the tournament, was named Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Week for her performance. Stephanie Lynch leads the team with 4.00 kpg and 1.27 bpg, while Sammi Mader (3.09 kpg) recorded her 1,000th career kill during the tournament. Sam Gray has 0.73 aces per game and 8.82 assists per game.
Head coach Dave Shondell is 81-53 in his fifth year at Purdue.
Utah is 1-0 all-time against Purdue. The only meeting came Sept. 13, 1997, a 3-0 win in Salt Lake City.
Scouting North Carolina
North Carolina claimed a 2-1 record at the Buffalo Classic last weekend, defeating Stony Brook and host Buffalo, 3-0, and falling to Baylor, 3-1.
Stephanie Jansma, who was the tournament MVP, is averaging 11.80 assists per game. Courtney Johnson leads the Tar Heels with 3.78 kpg while Heather Brooks has 1.67 bpg. Libero Brianna Eskola is averaging 4.70 dpg.
Head coach Joe Sagula is in his 18th season at UNC. He is 346-220 with the Tar Heels.
The Utes and Tar Heels have faced off on the court once, in 2006, a 3-0 Utah win.
Scouting Dayton
Dayton received votes in the AVCA poll this week after going 3-0 at the Dayton Flyer Classic. After downing IPFW (3-0) and Bowling Green (3-1), the Flyers defeated Illinois in five games, 3-2.
Jamie-Lee Richards leads Dayton with 3.33 kpg and 0.92 aces per game while A-10 Rookie of the Week Lindsay Fletemier has 1.25 bpg. Erin Schroeder serves as the setter with 10.83 assists per game. Libero Adrienne Green leads Dayton with 4.75 dpg.
Head coach Tim Horsmon is in his fifth season at Dayton. He is 98-41 with the Flyers.
Saturday's match marks the first meeting between Dayton and Utah.
Dangerous Dangerfield
Senior Connie Dangerfield was named to the all-tournament team of the AVCA Showcase. She averaged 5.38 digs per game at the showcase, more than any other player.
Dangerfield currently has 1,130 career digs, which ranks her third all-time at Utah. She is on pace to break the Utah record of 1,313, set in 1997 by Brenda Barton-Whicker.
Career Highs
Whitney Webb set a new career high with 21 kills against Tennessee at the AVCA Showcase. Kathryn Haynie tied her career best with 20 kills, and set a new career high with three service aces.
First Starts
Freshman Keisha Fisher made her first start for the Utes against UCLA. She had double-doubles in both of her first two collegiate matches, with 34 assists and 17 digs against UCLA and 10 digs and 59 assists against Tennessee.
Freshmen Karolina Bartkowiak and Leilani Ili also played in their first matches during the AVCA Showcase. Bartkowiak had eight kills and three blocks over the two matches, while Leilani saw action in one game.
