SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah soccer student-athlete Adele Letro (Jr., Davis, Calif.) is on the Women's 2007 Hermann Trophy Watch List. The announcement was made this morning by the Missouri Athletic Club and the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA). Letro is one of 46 players on the women's watch list.
"I think Adele is starting to be recognized for the excellent season she had last fall," Utah head coach Rich Manning said. "She's also being recognized for the great qualities she has in her game and the potential she has to change a game for us at any time. Adele has only played two collegiate seasons. I am very confident that she is going to continue to improve and live up to all of the expectations people have of her."
Letro was the 2006 Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a First-Team All-MWC selection. She was also an NSCAA/adidas Second-Team All-American, becoming the first Ute women's soccer player to earn All-America accolades of any kind. Letro scored 12 goals last season, leading the MWC in goals and scoring with 27 points (12 goals, three assists). She set new MWC records with eight game-winning goals in her sophomore campaign and five in league play.
Letro's inclusion marks the first time that Ute women's soccer player has been included on the Hermann Trophy Watch List. The Hermann Trophy is awarded to the nation's top collegiate soccer player. Players are selected to the watch list by a committee of Division I coaches who are NSCAA members.
In November, the list will be narrowed to 15 semifinalists. Three finalists will be named in early December in conjunction with the NCAA Division I College Cup. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club on Jan. 11. The winner of the 2007 award will be announced during a nationally-televised news conference that evening.
