SALT LAKE CITY - The Utes begin Mountain West Conference (MWC) action this weekend on the road, taking on San Diego State on Thursday, Sept. 13, and UNLV on Saturday, Sept. 16.
The Week In Review
Utah played two competitive matches against a pair of top 10 teams, falling 3-1 to No. 4 USC and 3-1 to No. 6 Florida.
Against the Trojans, Utah dropped a tight second game, 30-28, before bouncing back to win game three, 30-22. The Utes lost the fourth game, 30-19. Three players each had 11 kills for Utah, Lori Baird, Kathryn Haynie and Whitney Webb. Keisha Fisher and Connie Dangerfield both had two service aces.
After dropping game one, 30-28, Utah won game two, 30-28, in a contest that saw 18 ties throughout. The Utes lost the third game but came back to create a competitive fourth game before falling 30-26. Haynie tallied 17 kills on the evening with Karolina Bartkowiak leading the squad with seven blocks.
Scouting SDSU
San Diego State is 7-2 on the year. The Aztecs are currently on a four-match winning streak, with their last win coming against Northern Illinois, 3-1, on Sept. 8.
The squad is led by preseason All-MWC selection Aime Cordeiro, who leads the conference with 6.79 digs per game. Stephanie Darnall is the Aztecs top hitter, with 3.71 kills per game. She also has 3.26 digs per game.
Lindsey Mahan (1.42 bpg) and Lauren Salisbury (1.49 bpg) lead the team in blocks, while Leah Lathrop has 14 service aces. Head coach Mark Warner is in his 12th season at SDSU. He is 184-163 with the Aztecs.
Utah holds a slim 18-17 lead in the series against SDSU. Last year Utah won both matches, 3-0.
Scouting UNLV
UNLV is off to a solid start, holding an 8-1 record. The squad has won all three tournaments it has entered this season and has won its last seven games. Their victories include wins over Pac-10 teams Arizona State and Washington State, as well as the Big Ten's Northwestern.
The team is led by a pair of potent hitters in preseason All-MWC pick Maria Aladjo (4.25 kpg) and Lauren Miramontes (4.19 kpg). Melody Nua leads the MWC with 13.00 assists per game.
Jada Walker is second in the conference with 6.09 digs per game. Camille Cunningham has nine assists on the year.
Head coach Allison Keeley is in her fourth season with the Rebels. She is 58-38 with UNLV.
Utah is 23-1 all-time against the Rebels. The Utes won three meetings last season, including a 3-0 victory in the MWC Tournament. Utah's only loss in the series came during the WAC Tournament in 1998 (3-0).
Against the Best
Utah has played four teams in the top 25 of the AVCA poll, defeating No. 17 Purdue (3-2) and playing competitive games against No. 4 USC, No. 5 UCLA and No. 6 Florida, losing several games in each match by just a few points. In addition, the Utes fell to Dayton, 3-2, which moved into the rankings after playing Utah.
Dangerous Dangerfield
Senior Connie Dangerfield currently has 1,223 career digs, which ranks her second all-time at Utah. She is on pace to break the Utah record of 1,313, set in 1997 by Brenda Barton-Whicker. Dangerfield is currently averaging 4.53 digs per game.
Dangerfield was named to the all-tournament team of the AVCA Showcase. She averaged 5.38 digs per game at the showcase, more than any other player.
