SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Led by Kathryn Haynie's career-high 22 kills, the Utah volleyball team dropped its first conference match of the season, 3-1, to San Diego State.
Haynie also had three blocks and 12 digs in the loss. Lori Baird tallied 17 kills with a team-high six blocks. Keisha Fisher had 58 assists.
During the first two games, the lead went back-and-forth between the two squads. Each team was able to hold a slim lead during the course of play, with a total of 38 ties during the two games. The first game took overtime to decide, with San Diego State (9-2, 1-0 MWC) scoring three-straight points to take the 35-33 win. Lauren Salisbury and Sydney de Turk each had kills as part of the final points. In game two, with the game tied, 27-27, the Aztecs went on a 3-1 run to take the victory. Leah Lathrop had a service ace, while Hannah Evans ended the match with a kill for the 30-28 win.
After the break, Utah (2-6, 0-1 MWC) came out of the locker room with renewed enthusiasm and held as much as an eight point lead in game three, 15-7. SDSU surged at the end of the contest, tying the game 27-27 before Baird led the points for the Utah win, tallying two blocks with Chelsey Sandberg and hitting for a kill on the last point, giving the Utes the 30-28 victory.
San Diego State jumped out to an early lead in game four, 5-2, and held as much as a six-point lead, 21-15. Although Utah came within two points, 23-21, a poor hitting percentage hurt the Utes in the late points, as the Aztecs pulled away at the end to take the match with a 30-24 win.
For the Aztecs, Stephanie Darnall led the team with 19 kills while Aime Cordeiro had 23 digs. Salisbury had eight blocks on the night.
The Utes continue their road trip on Saturday, Sept. 15, against UNLV. The Rebels won their first conference game earlier this evening, upsetting No. 12 BYU, 3-0.
