SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team picked up its first shutout of the 2007 campaign Sunday afternoon. The Utes blanked Oregon 2-0 at Ute Field in non-conference action.
Utah jumped on top in the 22nd minute, when senior Kiley Jones (San Clemente, Calif.) scored off a rebound. Ute junior Adele Letro (Davis, Calif.) knocked two straight shots off Duck goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield. The second rebound came off to Jones, who put the ball past Chatfield to give Utah a 1-0 lead. Jones' goal was her first of the season and the third of her career.
The Utes maintained that one-goal advantage throughout the remainder of the first half, going into the intermission on top. Utah moved on top 2-0 less than 14 minutes into the second half. In the 59th minute, sophomore Kelly Isleib (Park City, Utah) threaded a pass through the Duck defense right onto the foot of freshman Erin Dalley (Centerville, Utah). Dalley scored easily from 10 yards out to the right of the keeper.
Dalley's goal was the first of her career. It came on the sixth assist of the season from Isleib.
"I'm completely thrilled about my first regular season goal," Dalley said. "I've been putting a lot of pressure on myself. So when I did score, it was a great relief and weight lifted off my shoulders."
Oregon couldn't muster much of an attack against a well-organized Ute defense and sophomore goalkeeper Lynzee Lee (Kalispell, Mont.). Lee recorded eight saves, but nearly all of them were of the routine variety. Lee picked up her first shutout of the season and the second of her career in the win.
"We battled hard and did well today," Ute head coach Rich Manning said. "We still have a lot of work to do defensively, but it's a step in the right direction."
Utah will be in action again Thursday, when the Utes host Cal Poly in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Ute Field.
