SALT LAKE CITY - Utah begins the week with an out-of-conference match against Weber State on Tuesday, Sept. 25, before going on the road in MWC action for Air Force (Friday, Sept. 28) and Wyoming (Saturday, Sept. 29).
The Week In Review
The Utah women's volleyball team rallied from deficits in all four games to earn its first Mountain West Conference win of the season, 3-1 (22-30, 32-30, 30-24, 35-33), against rival Colorado State, on Friday, Sept. 21.
Kate Robison led four players in double digits in kills, with 17. She also had 14 digs. Kathryn Haynie tallied 15 kills, 15 digs and three service aces, while Lori Baird recorded 16 kills and 10 digs. Whitney Webb had 12 kills and eight blocks.
Utah held Colorado State, which came into the game hitting .291 as a team, to just .143. The Utes also broke the Rams' seven-match winning streak.
Scouting Weber State
Weber State is 5-6 on the season. The Wildcats are coming off a 3-2 win over Idaho State. Weber State has gone five games in each of its last two matches, taking No. 17 BYU to five games on Sept. 18.
Chelsea Bair (3.16 kpg) and Micah Lines (3.38) are the top two hitters on the squad. Bair is serving up 0.56 aces per game while Lines has 3.36 digs per game and 14 aces. Kim Lissinna is averaging 8.63 assists per game while Caitlyn Anderson has 4.67 digs per game. Kolbie Murphey (1.14 bpg) and Brittney Bisaillon (1.12 bpg) lead the team in blocks.
Al Givens is in his 15th season as head coach of Weber State. He is 161-263 with the Wildcats.
Utah is 43-19 all-time against the Wildcats. The Utes have won the past four contests, while their last loss came in 2002.
Scouting Air Force
Air Force is 7-9 on the season after falling in its last two games, 3-0 to both TCU and New Mexico. The Falcons are 0-3 in the MWC.
Katie Batchelder leads the team with 3.08 kills per game, 23 service aces and 3.14 digs per game. Kim Kallabis serves as the primary setter with 7.67 assists per game. Nichole Stilwell has 0.76 blocks per game. The team has played 18 different players this season.
Head coach Penny Lucas-White is in her 12th season with Air Force.
Utah is 18-0 in the series against Air Force.
Scouting Wyoming
Wyoming holds a 6-5 record on the year. The Cowgirls have lost their last two matches, 3-1 to TCU and 3-0 to New Mexico. Wyoming's last win came over Air Force, 3-0 on Sept. 11.
Rachel Smith (4.46 kpg) and and Angie Hellbaum (4.20 kpg) are the Cowgirls most dangerous hitters, while both are averaging over 2.30 digs per game. Tasha Weishan serves as the setter with 12.49 assists per game and also has 17 aces to her credit. Carissa Lee leads Wyoming with 3.78 digs per game.
Head coach Pat Stangle is in his fourth year at Wyoming. He is 44-50 with the Cowgirls.
Utah holds a 37-23 all-time record against Wyoming. The Utes last loss against Wyoming came in 2002.
Against the Best
Utah has played four teams in the top 25 of the AVCA poll, defeating No. 17 Purdue (3-2) and playing competitive games against No. 4 USC, No. 5 UCLA and No. 6 Florida, losing several games in each match by just a few points. In addition, the Utes fell to Dayton, 3-2, which moved into the rankings after playing Utah. UNLV and Colorado State have also received votes in the poll.
Dangerous Dangerfield
Senior Connie Dangerfield currently has 1,274 career digs, which ranks her second all-time at Utah. She is on pace to break the Utah record of 1,313, set in 1997 by Brenda Barton-Whicker. Dangerfield is currently averaging 4.45 digs per game.
Dangerfield was named to the all-tournament team of the AVCA Showcase. She averaged 5.38 digs per game at the showcase, more than any other player.
Hot Haynie
Junior Kathryn Haynie leads the Utes with 3.64 kills per game. She has led the team in kills (or tied for the team lead) in five matches this season, including four of the last five. Her career-high of 22 kills came against San Diego State on Sept. 13.
In addition, Haynie leads the team with 13 service aces.
Fantastic Freshmen
Freshmen Keisha Fisher, Karolina Bartkowiak and Stephanie Shardlow have each made significant contributions in their first year with Utah. Fisher made her first start for the Utes against UCLA. She has had seven double-doubles this season. Fisher currently leads the Utes with 10.10 assists per game.
Freshmen Karolina Bartkowiak has played in 41 games this season. She is second on the team with 1.17 blocks per game.
Shardlow has started two matches this year, playing in seven. She had her first double-double of her careers against Colorado State (39 assists, 11 digs).
Leilani Ili has also played as a freshman.
