SALT LAKE CITY - After a strong opening week campaign at the BYU Invitational, the Ute track and field team hopes to continue its success this weekend. Most of the team will compete on Friday, Jan. 18, in Logan at the Utah State Open. Several athletes will travel to Idaho State on Saturday, Jan. 19, for the Snake River Invitational.
Ute Notes: Junior Ashley Patterson led the Utes at the BYU Invitational, winning the 300-meter run in 40.39 and running the anchor leg of the first-place 4x322 (one lap) team. The 4x322 team, which also included Jessica Suddaby, Chelsey Kaplar and Haley McAllister, finished in 2:59.91. Patterson also finished third in the triple-jump with a leap of 37-4 ½ feet to complete her weekend.
Others who had strong performances at BYU included Liza Whitehead, who ran the second-fastest time in school history in the 60-meter dash, finishing fourth in 7.83. Alyssa Abbott (5:08.82) and Chelsea DiGrazia (5:08.92) each ran personal bests in the mile run. Both of their times rank in the top-10 all-time at Utah. Kellie Anderson, who competed unattached in the mile, also ran a personal best (5:22.40). Chastity Toilolo finished second in the shot put. Her 43-9 effort was a personal best and ranks among the school's all-time top-10.
Coach Kepler's Two Cents: "This weekend's meets are very similar to last week. We are still feeling our way into the season in every event. Both meets will provide our athletes with opportunities to learn and improve physically and mentally. We won't have another meet for two weeks, so this will be an important week to make adjustments and continue to get better.
"We are sending some of our sprinters to Pocatello, Idaho, to take advantage of the banked turns. The Utah State meet does not offer a 200m event in its schedule of events, which Coach (Burke) Bockman would like a few of our women to run this week."
Looking Ahead: The Utes next compete in the Bronco Indoor Invitational, hosted by Boise State, Feb. 1-2.
