COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah senior Lori Baird gained her second Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honor this season. Baird shares the honor with TCU's Megan Munce, the league office announced Monday. This is the third honor of Baird's career and her second in the last three weeks.
Baird came through with a school single-match record and MWC season-best 16 block assists as well as a team-high 11 kills to lead the Utes to a 3-0 sweep at BYU in a Deseret First Duel match Friday.
Baird's 16 block assists ranks second all-time in MWC history, while her 16 total blocks is tied for third all-time in the league. She also had 11 kills and two digs against the Cougars.
Baird started fast in the match with six blocks and four kills in the first set, while tallying four more blocks and kills in the second set. She capped her performance with six blocks and three kills in the match finale.
The Murray, Utah, native led the Utes to a three-set school-record 37 block assists for the match, and averaged 5.33 blocks, 3.67 kills, 0.67 digs and 6.34 points per set, while hitting .304, with 11 kills and four errors on 24 attempts.
Ute players have now been named MWC Players of the Week on three consecutive occasions, with Emillie Toone winning the award for the first time in her career on Oct. 13.
Utah (14-4, 6-2 MWC) takes its season-long seven-match win streak to Air Force for a 7 p.m. match on Saturday, then plays at Oregon Monday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. The Utes return to Crimson Court Oct. 30 for a 7 p.m., match against New Mexico.
