SALT LAKE CITY - Utah senior outside hitter Lori Baird was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This is the third honor of Baird's career and her first this season.
Baird led Utah to three consecutive road victories last week, including conference wins at TCU and New Mexico. Starting with Utah's 3-1 non-conference win at Weber State Tuesday, Baird had 11 kills and a match-high five blocks to go along with four digs. Baird committed only one hitting error in 20 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage against the Wildcats.
In the Utes' 3-0 win at TCU, the 6-1 senior from Murray, Utah, totaled a match-high 14 kills, five blocks and two digs.
Baird then notched her second double-double of the season with 21 kills and a season-high 10 blocks in Utah's 3-1 win at New Mexico Saturday. Baird hit .447 (21-4-38) in four sets and collected four digs against the Lobos.
For the week, Baird averaged 4.18 kills, 1.82 blocks, 0.91 digs and 5.23 points per set with a .420 hitting percentage (46-9-88).
Baird leads the MWC with 1.39 blocks per set this season and is second with 3.98 points per set. She also ranks sixth among MWC players with 3.07 kills per set.
Baird last won the conference's Player of the Week honor on Oct. 29, 2007 after leading Utah to another 3-0 week. She was recognized for the first time in her career on Oct. 24 after leading the Utes to wins over UNLV and San Diego State.
