The NCAA Western Regional Championship was held at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim. Utah was matched up against the defending National Champions -- and the No. 1 seed in the West - the Arizona Wildcats.
The Wildcats featured a pair of guards labeled as the best in the country- Mike Bibby and Miles Simon. During 1997, they were the best. But in 1998, the Utes had Andre Miller ... and Andre put on a show.
In one of the greatest point guard performances ever: in the NCAA Tournametn. He posted a triple double with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists!
Miller had a little help, though. Mike Doleac had 16 points, Hanno Mottola added 14, Alex Jensen tallied 11 and David Jackson tossed in 10.
That handled the offense. Defensively, man-to-man coach Rick Majerus threw a little junk defense at Arizona. The Utes played the famed "Triangle and 2" against Bibby, Simon and the rest of the Wildcats.
That led to the Utes' 76-51 dismantling of the defending champs. And it sent Utah to its first Final Four since 1966.
The MVP of the West Regional? Andre Miller, of course!
