Baird Selected to A2 National Team Program

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah rising senior Lori Baird is one of 22 athletes selected to the U.S. Women's Senior A2 National Team program, USA Volleyball announced today.
Baird, a two-time All-West Region honorable mention selection, ranked second in the Mountain West Conference and in the top-20 in the country with 1.53 blocks per game. She also ranked fourth in the league in hitting percentage (.316). Baird was third on the team with 2.93 kills per game and second with 27 aces.
Baird was named MWC Co-Player of the Week on Oct. 29, leading Utah to wins over Utah Valley, Wyoming and Air Force. After hitting a career-best 18 kills against UNLV in the MWC Tournament, she was named to the all-tournament team.
"This is a great opportunity for Lori to play with some of the best college volleyball players in the country this summer," head coach Beth Launiere said. "At this level you have to play the game year-round, and this gives her the opportunity to play at a high level during the summer, when it is hard to get that kind of competition. I think she is a deserving player, she is playing the best volleyball of her career and she is the type of athlete they need in the national team program."
The 22 players will be split into two 11-member squads during training sessions prior to competing in the USA Volleyball Adult Open Championships May 24-31 in Atlanta. The competition will take place at the Georgia World Congress Center Hall B.
USA Volleyball held two tryouts at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to assist in the selection of the A2 Team. The first tryout session was an invitation-only event Jan. 7-11, while the second tryout was an open event held Feb. 22-24. Both tryouts doubled as evaluation periods for the A2 program as well as the U.S. Women's National Team which will compete at the Olympic Games.
The 2008 U.S. Women's National A2 Team includes four setters, seven outside hitters, six middles, three opposites and two liberos. The players come from 14 different collegiate programs.
The Utes finished the 2007 season 15-15.
