LARAMIE, Wyo. - Senior middle blocker Emillie Toone had 10 kills and six blocks but the University of Utah volleyball team could not avoid its third consecutive loss (25-22, 25-20, 25-18) Saturday at Wyoming in the UniWyo Sports Center.
Utah (7-4, 0-2 MWC) dropped to 0-4 when losing the first set this season.
"[Wyoming] just beat us," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "[The Cowgirls] were great in every aspect of the game: attacking, digging, and at the net. We couldn't get kills early in the match so [Wyoming's] confidence just grew with every point and they ended up playing very well the entire match."
Cinthia Silva had eight kills, six digs and three blocks for the match, while senior outside hitter Kathryn Haynie came through with four kills in the second set and had a total of seven to go along with six digs for the match.
Junior middle blocker Chelsey Sandberg led the Utes with three kills in the first set. Freshman Sarah Hibbert appeared in her third match of the season and registered a career-high two kills on three attempts.
Sophomore setter Stephanie Shardlow started the match for the Utes and dished out 11 assists. Shardlow was spelled by freshman Abby Simmons when Utah was down 2-0 to start the second set. Simmons coordinated 17 kills for the Ute offense in the match.
The Utes held a 5-1 edge in service aces and only committed two service errors, compared to four for the Cowgirls. Five different Utes tallied one service ace in the match.
Defensively, the Utes outblocked the Cowgirls 9.5 to four for the match, led by six blocks from Toone. Middle blocker Lori Baird, who surpassed the 1,000-kill mark Thursday at Colorado State, led the Ute defense in the second match of this road trip with 11 digs to go along with four blocks.
The Utes scored seven of the first 10 points of the first set, but the Cowgirls came back to tie the set at 10. Utah scored three of the next four points to regain a 13-11 edge, but Wyoming quickly retied the set at 14 and went on an 8-3 run for a 22-17 edge. Kills by Sandberg and Haynie reduced the lead to 22-19, but Cowgirls held on for a 25-22 first-set win.
Sandberg and Silva had three kills apiece in the opening set, although the Utes were outhit .394 to .189. Utah did outblock the Cowgirls 4-1 in the first set thanks to three blocks by Toone and two apiece by Silva and Baird.
The two sides reversed roles in the beginning of the second set. The Utes fell behind 11-4 to start, but battled back and used a 5-0 run to take a 16-15 lead. The two sides kept battling until a Wyoming service error followed by an ace by Baird gave the Utes a 19-17 lead in the third set.
The Cowgirls turned the match in their favor by scoring four consecutive points for a 21-19 lead that they would never relinquish. Wyoming then scored six of the last seven points to take a 25-20 second-set victory. Haynie came through with a team-high four kills in the set for the Utes.
After being down 10-3 in the third set, the Utes cut the Cowgirl advantage to one (16-15) but could not make a move for the lead. Wyoming went on a 6-1 run to put the match out of reach for the Utes as the Cowgirls cruised to a 25-18 match-clinching win.
"It's always tough to win on the road," Launiere said. "In the Mountain West Conference, we have to be focused and play hard every single time we step on the floor."
Wyoming (2-9, 1-1 MWC) was led by Dani Bedore, who had a match-high 14 kills with a .379 hitting percentage to go with a match-high 12 digs. Setter Tasha Weishan served up a match-high 39 assists.
The Utes open up their MWC home slate hosting Air Force at 7 p.m., Thursday at Crimson Court.
