SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah soccer team (6-7-2, 1-1-1 MWC) returns home for a pair of Mountain West Conference games this week at Ute Field. The Utes host TCU (8-6-0, 1-2-0) TONIGHT at 7 p.m., then face New Mexico (10-2-2, 2-1-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Turpen Named MWC Defensive Player of the Week...
University of Utah sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen has been named the Mountain West Conference Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Turpen led the Utes to a 1-0 shutout win on the road at UNLV and made several key saves in a 1-1 draw at San Diego State last weekend.
Turpen allowed just one goal in 200 minutes of action on the road last weekend while making nine saves. In the Utes' 1-0 win at UNLV, the San Clemente, Calif., native, made two saves en route to her fourth shutout this season and the sixth clean sheet of her career. Against San Diego State, Turpen faced 24 shots and made seven saves to preserve the 1-1 tie in double-overtime.
"Hannah showed a lot of mental toughness and character last weekend," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "For a lot of the UNLV game she didn't have much to do, but when they forced her into decisions and plays toward the end, she handled it well. Saturday Hannah was put in a tough environment at SDSU and faced a lot of shots and made a lot of good plays, including a game-saving stop right at the end of overtime. The whole team really stepped up the defense last weekend with a renewed commitment to keeping the ball out of our net."
The All-Time Series...
The Utes and Horned Frogs have met six times on the soccer field, splitting the all-time series 3-3. Both teams are unbeaten at home, Utah at 2-0 and TCU at 3-0. The Utes' third win over the Frogs came in their last meeting, a neutral-pitch tilt in last season's MWC Tournament semifinals in Las Vegas. Utah took down TCU on an own-goal just 25 seconds into overtime as a ricocheted shot from current Utah junior Lauren Hair (Alpine, Utah) was slid past the goalkeeper.
Against New Mexico, Utah holds an all-time mark of 10-4-2 and has never lost to the Lobos at home, going 6-0-1. The Utes are unbeaten in the last four matches against New Mexico, going 3-0-1. In their last meeting, the U. claimed a 1-0 victory in Albuquerque, N.M. last year. Current sophomore defender Lauren Porter (Salt Lake City) was the goal-scorer in the win.
Scouting The Opposition...
TCU - The Horned Frogs come into Thursday's competition with a 1-2 record in league play following a split of its weekend home games. TCU defeated Air Force 1-0 Thursday, then fell in overtime to Wyoming, 2-1. In their conference opener they dropped a 1-0 decision at New Mexico.
Leading the Frog attack is sophomore forward Jordan Calhoun with eight goals and six assists for 22 points on the year, while senior forward Lizzy Karoly has also chipped in five goals and one assist for 11 points. However, neither of them have registered a point in conference play thus far.
Defensively, junior goalkeeper Kelsey Walters has seen the lion's share of playing time between the pipes, starting 11 of TCU's games. Walters has made 38 saves while allowing 17 goals, recording a save percentage of .691 and a goals-against-average of 1.50. She holds a 6-5-0 record with two shutouts.
Dan Abdalla is the head coach of the Horned Frogs, now in his fifth season. He has amassed a record of 42-40-6 (.511) at TCU and is just four wins shy of 100 overall in his 10-year head coaching career.
New Mexico - The Lobos are also coming off of a split weekend at home in which they fell to Wyoming, 2-1, but bounced back to defeat Air Force, 1-0. Their 1-0 conference-opening victory over TCU gives them a 2-1 mark in league play.
Including all games, sophomore forward Jennifer Williams has been lighting up opposing defenses, tallying nine goals and six assists for 24 points this year. Sophomore midfielder Nicole Reed has contributed two goals and five assists for nine points, while sophomore defender Zaneta Wyne has knocked in three goals. In league competition, Williams, junior midfielder Rachel Fields and junior midfielder Alexis Ball have each scored once.
Kelli Cornell has played every minute of the season in goal for the Lobos, giving up a mere eight goals while making 32 saves. She currently maintains a GAA of 0.55, with a save percentage of .800, and has recorded a staggering nine shutouts in 14 games.
New Mexico is guided by 9th-year head coach Kit Vela, who owns a career record of 66-70-28 (.488).
Turpen Earns Weekly Conference Honor...
Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen (San Clemente, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Turpen is now tied for second among all MWC goalkeepers in goals-against-average during league play, registering a 0.90 GAA through three games. She ranks second in saves with 14 and third in saves per game at 4.67.
Including all games, Turpen has amassed 48 saves this season, bringing her career total to 62. She has started 14 of the Utes' 15 games this year, building a 6-6-2 record. She has now appeared in 22 games over the last two years, making 19 starts, and owns a career record of 11-7-2 (.600).
Turpen is the first Utah soccer player this season to receive a weekly honor from the conference. It is the first league honor of her career.
Terry And Freshman Class Maintain Strong Play...
In Utah's 1-1 draw at San Diego State, freshman forward Hanna Terry (Park City, Utah) scored her fourth goal of the season, bringing the Utes back from a 1-0 deficit and ultimately earning the tie.
With five of the seven freshmen on the roster logging at least one goal or assist, the class as a whole has accounted for seven scores and four helpers (18 points), or roughly 29% of the team's total offense. All seven have seen significant playing time with Terry, Allie Wisner (Bozeman, Mont.), Stephanie Lemeza (Mississauga, Ontario) and Zoe Van Gorder (Park City, Utah) all cracking the starting lineup.
Defensive Trends...
Utah has held its opponents scoreless on five occasions this year, going 5-0 in those contests. However, when allowing at least one goal, Utah's record drops to 1-7-2.
Threatening From Everywhere...
Utah has now scored 23 goals on the year with 10 different players finding the back of the net. The Utes have had offensive production from all over the field, evidenced by the following goal breakdown by position: forward (13), holding midfield (6), center back (2), attacking midfield (1) and outside back (1). Utah has gotten multiple goals from six players, while four others have lit up the scoreboard once.
Utah's Mountain West Conference History...
Utah captured its first conference title in 1999, the inaugural year of the MWC. The Utes were named co-champions as they finished in a three-way tie with San Diego State and BYU.
Utah's next league title came in 2003, as the Utes swept both the MWC regular-season and tournament championships. Utah went undefeated in conference play for the first time in school history, posting a 6-0-0 record. The Utes then topped BYU by a 2-0 score in the tournament championship match, held in Salt Lake City. The successful 2003 campaign kicked off a string of four straight years in which either the regular season or conference tournament hardware would rest in the Utes' trophy case at season's end.
In 2004, Utah won its second consecutive MWC Tournament championship, advancing past San Diego State in the finals. The match was tied 1-1 following regulation and overtime play, but the Utes eventually conquered the Aztecs in penalty kicks to claim the title.
The 2005 season saw Utah finish atop the MWC standings in the regular season, posting another undefeated conference record at 6-0-1.
With another flawless year in 2006, registering a 7-0-0 record, Utah joined BYU as the only two programs in the MWC's history to post back-to-back unbeaten seasons. Utah and BYU also share the distinction of being the two most successful soccer programs in MWC history. Utah has captured either the regular-season or conference tournament championship five times, while BYU has claimed a title eight times. Both squads have also twice doubled up to sweep both titles in the same year.
From the Mind of Manning...
On returning home for two games this week:
"I think our team has grown a lot in the weeks since our string of home games at the start of the season. This week will be a good way to measure our progress again. I know the players are excited to be back at Ute Field and are looking forward to these two games."
On facing TCU and New Mexico:
"TCU is a lot like us in many ways. They have great team speed, they move the ball well, they like to attack and they have a lot of young players. We split with them last year and I think we are very evenly matched again this year. I am anxious to see how we measure up.
"New Mexico is never an easy game. They are very well organized and committed to playing great defense. They really make you earn the goals you can get. It takes a great effort and some good attacking plays to beat them. It will be a different game than the TCU match but I think it will be just as tight and competitive.
On Hannah Turpen's Defensive Player of the Week award:
"Hannah showed a lot of mental toughness and character last weekend," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "For a lot of the UNLV game she didn't have much to do, but when they forced her into decisions and plays toward the end, she handled it well. Saturday Hannah was put in a tough environment at SDSU and faced a lot of shots and made a lot of good plays, including a game-saving stop right at the end of overtime. The whole team really stepped up the defense last weekend with a renewed commitment to keeping the ball out of our net."
