POCATELLO, IDAHO - The University of Utah women's track and field team finished the last day of the Mountain State Games on Saturday night with several top-five finishes and the women's 4x400-meter relay team winning their event with a time of 3:52.87. Utah also saw champions in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run, long jump and high jump as well.
"I am overall pleased with how we did this weekend," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "We took steps forward in every event and had four champions. Chelsea [Shapard] ran a Grade A race. Langley [Iverson] is winning her event and is only a sophomore. She had three great jumps and we're excited about those prospects. The throwers keep getting better each week and we are certainly embracing that."
In the 400-meter dash, Chelsey Kaplar ran a strong race to finish first with a time of 57.45, with teammate Lucy Yates finishing close behind for second place and a finish time of 58.39. Also finishing in the top ten of the event was Whitney Wellington with a time of 59.72 to earn sixth-place.
The 800-meter run was dominated by senior Chelsea Shapard. The Ute finished in 2:11.27 ahead of Laken skidmore of Weber State (2:15.73) and Jenna Lowder of BYU (2:16.43). Shapard's time ranks second on Utah's all-time indoor performance list. Janett Ern came in fourth-place with a time of 2:17.09.
The long jump was headed by Haley McAllister-Birkeland with a jump of 18'3.25" to win the event. Ashley Patterson finished third in the competition after jumping 18'1".
Freshman Langley Iverson came out victorious on Saturday in the high jump after reaching the 5'6" mark. Sydney Wendt from Idaho State came in second-place with a 5'4.25" clearance.
