SALT LAKE CITY - After giving solid performances at the 2009 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 26-28, Josefin Berg, Lauren Endersen, Chelsea Shapard, and Utah's 4x400 relay team garnered All-MWC honors.
"This is as many athletes as we've had make the indoor all-conference team since I've been here," commented head coach Kyle Kepler. "The team as a whole did a great job at the conference meet, but these athletes really pushed hard. "For our athletes to perform so well at a championship meet shows that our team and program are improving in a quantifiable way."
Berg finished second in the weight throw with a new lifetime best and Utah's all-time seventh best throw of 57' 9.75", which was only 5" shorter than the winning throw.
Endersen finished second in the 5,000-meter run after executing a smart race. She led the pack for the majority of the last leg, but couldn't maintain it at the finish line. She finished with a time of 18.28.04.
Shapard was explosive in the 800-meter preliminaries at the conference meet with a qualifying time of 2:16.98. In the finals the following day, the Ute ran another strong race, but tripped with a lap to go. She fought back, however, to finish in 2:11.82 to earn her third-place overall.
Utah's 4x400 relay team, comprised of Ashley Patterson, Chelsey Kaplar, Whitney Wellington, and Shapard, had a tremendous race at the conference meet. The team rallied together to finish in 3:49.22, ahead of BYU's relay team that finished third (3:51.44).
