SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team's Chelsea Shapard will be competing the Alex Wilson Invitational, one of the final "last chance" meets in the country this weekend. Notre Dame will host the event at the Loftus Sports Center. Shapard will be competing on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. (EST).
Shapard will be competing in the 800-meter event with the goal of attaining an automatic bid or a provisional qualification into the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. For automatic qualification, Shapard would have to finish in 2:05, and to earn a provisional qualification, her time would have to be 2:09 or faster.
"We think Chelsea has a legitimate chance to qualify for the indoor championships. We would not send her halfway across the country if we didn't," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "The Alex Wilson Invitational (hosted by Notre Dame) Last Chance produces several NCAA championship qualifiers each year. Chelsea has had a great senior season thus far. She won't have to worry about anything but running fast."
The Ute was last seen at the MWC Indoor Championship on Feb. 28 in the 800-meter finals. She ran a strong race from the start, but tripped with a lap to go. Although breaking her momentum, Shapard finished third with a time of 2:10.35, a lifetime best that ranks second on Utah's all-time list.
