Notre Dame, Ind. - Chelsea Shapard of the University of Utah track and field team competed in the Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Loftus Sports Center for a last chance at qualifying for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track Championship. Shapard ran a lifetime best in the 800-meter of 2:07.80, a provisional qualification mark.
Shapard jumped out to the front of the pack right from the gun. At the 300-meter mark, her shoe was clipped by another runner causing a stumble, but recovered and hung in with the competition. Shapard dug deep and pushed herself, coming in seventh-place overall with a time of 2:07.80, a new lifetime best that ranks second on Utah's all-time indoor performance list. Her mark was a provisional qualification time for the NCAA Championship, but not enough for an automatic bid (2:05).
