PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah women's soccer team went 2-0 in spring exhibition play last Saturday in Provo, defeating Utah Valley by a 2-1 score and downing Dixie State, 1-0. The Utes improved to 3-1-1 in spring exhibition games.
"Overall we played with good purpose and to come back from a halftime deficit in the first game showed a strong mentality," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "All winter and spring we have worked hard on possession and speed of play, and we were very pleased with the way we moved the ball and created quality chances. I think with a little more precision around the goal, we could have scored a few more."
In the first game, Utah trailed at halftime following a 30th-minute goal by the Wolverines. Utah netted the equalizer in the 55th minute as freshman midfielder Katie Martinez (Littleton, Colo.) buried a one-bounce header to the far post after freshman midfielder Chelsea Forbes (Bountiful, Utah) provided the service off a free kick.
The Utes then took a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute as sophomore forward Lauren Hair (Alpine, Utah) scored the eventual game-winner, with Forbes notching another assist. Forbes beat her defenders up the right side and crossed it into the Utah Valley penalty box, where Hair turned on a perfect first touch and toe-poked it past the Wolverine goalkeeper from six yards out.
"That was a class finish from Lauren," said Manning. "She had a player on her back and made a great turn. She may not have scored that goal last fall, but Lauren has worked very hard on making cleaner touches in the box and she has been on fire this fall."
The second game of the day, a 60-minute contest played indoors due to rain, saw the Utes defeat Dixie State, 1-0, as they got another game-winner off the foot of Hair. After 50 minutes of scoreless soccer, sophomore forward Erin Dalley (Centerville, Utah) was taken down in box, earning the Utes a penalty-try. Hair stepped up to the spot and knocked it home.
All three of Utah's goalkeepers saw action on the day, with freshman Hannah Turpen playing the first half against Utah Valley and the second half against Dixie State. Junior Emalee Rogers (Centerville, Utah) played the second half against the Wolverines and freshman Shaylyn Kennedy (Murray, Utah) played the first half against the Rebels.
Another positive to come out of Saturday's games was the continued playing time for Utah's players returning from injury. Dalley (knee) played all four halves, as did freshman forward Anne Shallenberger (compartment syndrome), while Martinez (compartment syndrome) played three.
Utah wraps up its spring competition this weekend as the team heads to the Pacific Northwest for a pair of games. The Utes will face Oregon on Saturday, then take on Oregon State on Sunday. Both games will be played on the Nike campus in Beaverton, Ore.
