BEAVERTON, Ore. - The University of Utah soccer team went 1-1 in spring exhibition play over the weekend, concluding its spring season with a 4-2-1 record. Utah fell to Oregon on Saturday, 1-0, but bounced back to defeat Seattle by a 2-1 score on Sunday. Both games were played on the Ronaldo fields at the Nike campus in Beaverton.
"Overall I think we got what we wanted out of this weekend and the spring as a whole," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "We had a lot of different players get a lot of minutes and we were able to try people at different positions. All of our players, especially the ones returning from injury, can go into the summer with confidence as they continue to get ready for this fall."
In the first game of the weekend, Utah's sixth of the spring, the Utes dropped a 1-0 decision to Oregon as the Ducks played their first spring game. OU scored the game's only goal in the 57th minute of play as a shot from just outside the penalty box hit the far post and went in. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Turpen played the entire 90 minutes.
"I think Oregon deserved the victory there," said Manning. "For about the first 25 minutes they had the run of play before we settled in. Hannah played well and made some good saves, and we did create some chances to tie the game."
In the final game of the spring exhibition season, Utah found itself trailing Seattle after just four minutes as a 25-yard Redhawk blast found the back of the net. Just before halftime of the 80-minute game however, the Utes pulled the game even at 1-1 as sophomore forward Erin Dalley buried a header off of a corner kick by freshman midfielder Chelsea Forbes.
Just a few minutes after halftime, Forbes and Dalley hooked up once again to score the eventual game-winning goal. Forbes was able to slip a pass through the defense, which Dalley ran onto and slotted home for her second goal of the contest. Junior goalkeeper Emalee Rogers played the first 60 minutes of the game and freshman Shaylyn Kennedy played the final 20 minutes.
"Once again we started slow but we were able to pick it up and play very well at times," said Manning. "Emalee and Shay both made some very good saves. Emalee stopped a 1-on-1 right after we scored, and Shay saved a couple of good, long shots to help preserve the win."
Utah was boosted by the return of junior midfielder Kelly Isleib following her participation in the US U-23 Women's National Team Camp in Oregon. Senior Katy Reineke, who will graduate in May, also made the trip. The team got some additional support from a contingent of Dalley's family and friends, who live in the area.
