The University of Utah volleyball team has been chosen to compete at the fourth annual Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in Riverside, Calif., on Saturday, April 18. The event, hosted by CBS College Sports Network, AVCA and AVP, features top-ranked participants like Hawaii, San Diego, Texas, Nebraska, North Carolina, Southern California and California-Riverside.
"We're excited to participate in this event with so many top volleyball programs," head coach Beth Launiere said. "Whether it's indoor or outdoor, we want to compete at the highest levels possible. This is the premier outdoor event in the nation.
With the probable addition of sand volleyball as an NCAA sport, this is a great prelude to competing in the sand for possible NCAA competition in the future."
The Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship will be held on a closed street in downtown Riverside, Calif., that will be full of sand courts for the event. The semifinal and final rounds will be held at the adjacent AVP Stadium Court, while the AVP Crocs Tour Riverside Open is being scheduled around the event to attract larger crowds.
The Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship is part of the fourth annual Alt Games, a first-of-its kind event showcasing college action sports championships. Television coverage will kick off with the Alt Game Preview Show on Saturday, May 9 at 5 p.m. MT. Portions of the event will be televised by CBS Sports on Saturday, May 16 at noon p.m. MT.
CBS College Sports will bring viewers on the sand and behind the scenes during the AVP Invitational Elite Camp held in Hermosa Beach, Calif., in a two-part series "Go Pro or Go Home." The show will air on May 28 (6 p.m. MT) and June 4 (6:30 p.m. MT) and will feature Utah's Lori Baird, who was selected to participate as one of the nation's top 16 graduating senior collegiate women's volleyball players.
