SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team will host Utah State at Ute Field Wednesday night at 7 p.m. MT in spring exhibition play. Admission to the game is free of charge.
"As with all of spring games, this is an opportunity to apply what we have done in training to a game situation," said Manning. "It is also an opportunity to get valuable minutes for some of our players that didn't as much time in the fall and help the players coming off of injury gain more confidence as we move toward the summer. It's also a chance to try some different players at different positions."
In their last action, the team hosted its annual alumni game Saturday. More than 20 former players came out as current and former Utes took the same field to celebrate their time playing for the Crimson and White. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
"I was very happy to see a large group of alumni return for the game and I thought the level of play from them was very good," said Manning. "It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and energy our alumni had about coming back and reconnecting with each other and with the program. We had former players return from as far as California and Alabama and there even talk about creating a fall alumni event and starting and alumni website. I hope we can continue to keep these relationships strong."
The weekend also featured the annual team banquet on Friday night, where the team celebrated its season and announced its yearly awards, as voted on by the players. The team's Most Valuable Player award went to junior midfielder Kelly Isleib, while Offensive Player of the Year went to sophomore forward Lauren Hair and Defensive Player of the Year was awarded to senior midfielder Amanda Sanchez. Freshman of the Year honors went to defender Lauren Porter. Freshman midfielder Mallory Mitamura was named the Most Improved and senior midfielder Danielle Sample received the Most Inspirational award.
"After a rough start to the fall and a lot of challenges faced, some of our own doing, the way we sorted it out and finished the season in a strong manner gave our team a sense of achievement," said Manning. "The banquet really gave us a good feeling about the ability to overcome those obstacles and make something good happen from them, and it was great to get everyone together to celebrate that. The other main objective of the banquet is to honor our seniors, spend some time with them and thank them. To have them all with us was the highlight of the event."
Next up for the team is a trip down to Provo on Saturday, April 11, where the Utes will take on Utah Valley at 10 a.m. and Dixie State at 6 p.m. Originally, Utah was scheduled to face BYU and Idaho State, but due to a change in participating teams, will now face the Wolverines and the Rebels.
