SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team defeated Utah State by a 3-1 score in spring exhibition play Wednesday evening at Ute Field. Two different Utes found the back of the net, with sophomore Erin Dalley scoring the game-winner.
"We have been working really hard on keeping possession and our speed of play," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "I was very pleased with those elements at times, especially at the beginning and end of the game. We have to work on doing that for longer stretches. It was a well contested game against good competition and playing 90 minutes against a quality opponent was good for our players. Hopefully the coaches and players have some feedback we can use and work on for the rest of spring."
Utah took a 1-0 lead in the first half on an own-goal, created by junior midfielder Kelly Isleib and sophomore forward Lauren Hair, one of the Utes' most prolific scoring combinations last fall. Isleib played a through-pass to Hair, whose shot beat the goalkeeper but found the post. The ricochet came across the goal line and was cleared by a defender, but the clearance hit her teammate and bounced back into the Aggie goal, giving Utah the 1-0 lead.
The Utes then netted a second after halftime to take a 2-0 lead off the foot of Dalley, for the eventual game-winner. Dalley received the ball just over midfield, dribbled through the defense and took a shot from the top of the penalty box. That shot was blocked by a sliding defender, but the rebound fell back to Dalley, whose second attempt found the back of the net.
Utah State pulled one back in the 69th minute to cut the Utes' edge to 2-1. Utah committed a foul just outside its own penalty box, setting up an indirect kick for the Aggies. After the ball was put in play by a teammatet, Utah State's Lindsey Smart blasted a shot into the corner of the Utes' goal.
Less than one minute later though, Hair gave Utah back its two-goal advantage. Isleib brought the ball down the left side and played a cross from about 30 yards out to the far side of the goal. Hair came streaking in, slid and hit a perfect half-volley from eight yards out for the finish.
Utah used all three of its goalkeepers in the game: freshman Hannah Turpen, junior Emalee Rogers and freshman Shaylyn Kennedy.
Utah improves to 1-1-1 in spring exhibition play. The Utes lost a 2-1 decision to BYU in their first spring game, then played to a 0-0 draw against UNLV in game two, both played in Las Vegas.
Utah resumes its spring exhibition schedule Saturday as the Utes head down to Provo for two games on the BYU campus. They will face Utah Valley at 10 a.m. and Dixie State at 6 p.m.
The Utes will be without Isleib for Saturday's games as she will join the U.S. U-23 Women's National Team at its training camp in Portland, Ore., April 11-19.
