SALT LAKE CITY - Six matches against schools that qualified for last season's NCAA Tournament highlight the 2009 University of Utah volleyball schedule, released by head coach Beth Launiere Wednesday.
Utah will take on a challenging schedule as it is comes off one of its most successful seasons in the program's 35-year history. The Utes posted a 26-6 overall record in 2008 en route to a Mountain West Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance. Launiere is entering her 20th season as Utah's head coach with a 391-212 (.648) record at the school.
The Utes will be challenged with a difficult schedule, including Pacific-10 Conference foes Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Washington State, BIG EAST Conference member Cincinnati as well as Missouri of the Big XII Conference.
"Our tradition of playing strong competition has propelled our program to national prominence," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "The 2009 schedule is no different."
Utah will play 14 home matches during the 2009 regular season, starting with the annual Utah Classic at Crimson Court, Aug. 28-29. The four-team field includes Arizona State, Cincinnati and UC-Riverside.
"The Utah Classic field will be strong again and will give our fans some exciting volleyball to watch on opening weekend," Launiere said.
Utah wraps up its season-opening four-match homestand with a mid-week contest against Cal Poly on Sept. 1, before heading to the Utah Valley tournament for its first road action of the season. The Utes will take on Utah Valley, Washington State, and Missouri Sept. 4-5.
"The purpose of preseason is to prepare us well for the Mountain West Conference," Launiere said. "The strong competition will get us ready to go after another MWC championship."
After taking on Utah State in a mid-week match in Logan, Utah on Sept. 8, the Utes will conclude its early-season tournament action at the Santa Clara Tournament, Sept. 11-12. Utah will face Arizona before taking on the host Broncos.
The early portion of Utah's non-conference slate concludes with a match against Oregon, Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Crimson Court.
"It will be an exciting year for Utah Volleyball fans with the level of competition coming to Crimson Court," Launiere said.
Utah then begins Mountain West Conference action with three straight home matches, starting Sept. 17 against Air Force.
The opening Deseret First Duel volleyball match of the season against BYU at Crimson Court Sept. 25 and will kick off the Utah Volleyball Reunion weekend. Former Ute players from the program's first 35 years will be honored during the Sept. 25 match and will participate in a sand volleyball tournament at Wasatch Beach Sept. 26. Utah's second Deseret First Duel match is Oct. 23 at BYU.
The Utes wrap up their regular-season with a non-conference road match at Long Beach State on Nov. 28.
"Playing Long Beach [State] is an opportunity to gauge ourselves hopefully heading into the NCAA tournament," Launiere said. "It will be two good teams from two good conferences playing each other late in the season."
The NCAA Tournament begins Dec. 3 with the first and second rounds. The NCAA Championship will be hosted in the St. Pete Times Forum, Dec. 17-19.
Start times and television coverage for selected matches will be announced at a later date.
