SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team opened preseason camp with a pair of practices Monday in HPER E109. The Utes will hold two-a-day practices for the next two days before leaving before leaving for St. George, Utah Thursday to continue preseason camp.
"The team brought a lot of energy and excitement to today's practices," Utah assistant coach Heather Olmstead said. "But with all of the energy and excitement typical of a first day, it was good to see that the experienced players brought a calming effect to the newcomers as well."
After the first practice of the season today at 9:30 a.m., the Utes held individual sessions from 2:30 to 3 p.m., before their second practice from 3 to 5 p.m. "We improved throughout each session and I feel we have a good gauge of where we're at and what we need to do to get better each day," Olmstead said.
"Everyone started to step into different roles today," senior middle blocker Chelsey Sandberg said. "Communication is the key to building a strong team and everyone talked a lot so we just need to continue doing that."
Sandberg and junior opposite hitter Karolina Bartkowiak have been named co-captains on this year's squad.
"We started our preseason strong," Bartkowiak said. "It was intense throughout the entire day and we ran a lot of good drills."
Head coach Beth Launiere was absent from the first day of practice as she is returning from her assistant coach appointment with Team USA at the World Grand Prix in Thailand. Launiere will be back in Salt Lake City for Tuesday's team activities.
Utah opens the season Friday, Aug. 28 against Arizona State at Crimson Court. See Photos from the first day of practice.
