SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team held its first intrasquad scrimmage Wednesday in HPER E109. The Utes will now leave for St. George, Utah tomorrow to continue preseason camp.
"I'm pleased with how things went in our scrimmage today," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "Throughout our first few practices, we have focused particularly on three phases of the game: passing, serving and defense. Our players have made some nice changes in those areas and that was evident today.
"We're not necessarily concerned with outcomes right now," Launiere said. "But we just want to see improvement from everyone on the team during each practice."
Senior outside hitter Cinthia Silva, who was among the top five on the team last season with 2.25 digs, 0.77 blocks, 1.99 kills per set and four double-double performances, was content with the team's progress thus far.
"We have had a solid three days of practice to start the season," Silva said. "We blocked well today and there were a lot of long rallies, but we still have things to work on. But overall, I'm happy with where we are."
Former Utes Lori Baird and Kathryn Haynie returned to campus to participate in today's scrimmage.
Utah opens its season Friday, Aug. 28 against Arizona State at Crimson Court. See photos from the first intrasquad scrimmage of the year.
