SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team held an intersquad scrimmage Friday night under the lights at Ute Field. Sophomore forward Anne Shallenberger was the game's lone goal scorer. Utah is preparing for its season-opener on August 21 against Utah Valley at Ute Field. The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
"I think we did a lot of good things tonight," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "We have a lot of new players that got some game-like experience and showed that they are fitting in with our team. We played good possession and a lot of players looked very comfortable on the ball.
"We wanted to see a couple of things," Manning continued. "We have some players battling for starting spots and we were looking for players to stand out. We also wanted to work on implementing the things we have been working on such as coordination on defense and some of our different ideas on offense."
Divided equally, the squads played 35 minute-halves. At halftime, the two teams were shuffled to give the coaching staff a look at players in different positions and several combinations of personnel.
"I feel we are deep in a lot of places, we have great competition and coverage," said Manning. "It was great to see Erin Dalley and Jen Christoffers (both coming off of knee injuries) out there again and see their progress, I was very pleased with that. I thought all three of our goalkeepers played well and Morgan Skeen had a very good game in the back. Kelly Isleib had a good game and Stephanie Lemeza played well in the holding midfield position."
Shallenberger's goal came early in the first half. The ball was played over the top of the defense, where Shallenberger ran onto it and bent a nice shot into the goal from outside the penalty box.
Utah will scrimmage again on Monday, Aug. 17, at 5:30 p.m. at Ute Field.
Player Quotes
Senior goalkeeper Emalee Rogers
"I thought everyone played well tonight. It was good to come out, play at a faster pace and get a feel for how it will be next weekend when we open the season. I thought the goalkeepers collectively did very well. Hannah (Turpen) made a great save and Shaylyn (Kennedy) had some good distribution. We all could have been a little better on high balls and corner kicks, that's something to keep working on."
"My goal for this camp is to go out and leave it all on the field. Knowing it's my last camp and I will be done with soccer in a few months, I want to keep improving and help set the standard and be an example for the younger players."
Sophomore forward Anne Shallenberger
"It was good to come out and play in a game situation, I think we had a good showing. We are getting excited for our home opener and it was nice to play on a full field. I think we are moving the ball better and you can tell in the first two weeks that we have improved from last year."
"I think I got the nerves out last year and knew what to expect coming into my second training camp. We all came in more fit than last year, the whole team has a great attitude and we are ready to keep working hard."
Junior defender Morgan Skeen
"I think our defense is coming together really well. The new players are getting comfortable, we are coming together and working on our timing and communication. I think we will be really strong in the back this year."
"Camp has been very competitive and intense from the start. I think we are practicing more game situations and it's benefitting us."
Freshman midfielder Stephanie Lemeza
"It's exciting to be out here and playing. We concentrated a lot on set plays and working together."
"It takes some time to get a grasp of the college game and I'm still learning it. The speed of play, intensity and physicality is a higher level. Two-a-days has helped in getting ready and getting to know my new teammates on the field."
"It was good to see some people come out to watch tonight. It's getting us pumped for our opener next weekend."
