SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah was ranked 17th in the 2009 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll, the organization announced Tuesday.
The Utes have five matches against teams ranked in the top 25, beginning Sat., Sept. 12 at No. 25 Santa Clara in a 7 p.m. match. Utah hosts No. 14 Oregon at Crimson Court Tue., Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. MT, then travels to No. 23 Long Beach State Sat., Nov. 28 for a 7:30 p.m. PT match.
"It's great to receive national recognition like this," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "We have a lot of work in front of us, but we're looking forward to the challenge of facing such a difficult schedule this year."
The only other Mountain West Conference school in the poll, Colorado State, was ranked 24th. The Utes face the Rams twice in the regular season: Sat., Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. MT, in Fort Collins, Colo., then at home Thur., Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. MT. The Nov. 12 match will be televised live on The Mtn.
The Utes also have two matches against schools that were listed as receiving votes in the poll, Arizona and Cal Poly.
In addition to being ranked 19th in Volleyball Magazine's Preseason Poll earlier this month, Utah was also selected to repeat as champions in the MWC's Preseason Coaches Poll and junior opposite hitter Karolina Bartkowiak was named to the Preseason All-MWC Team.
Utah advanced to its second NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance in school history last season and won the MWC championship with a 14-2 conference record after ending the league slate with 14 consecutive victories.
The Utes open the season against Arizona State on Friday, Aug. 28, in the Utah Classic at Crimson Court.
