SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah was ranked 19th in the 2009 Volleyball Magazine Preseason Poll, the publication announced Thursday.
Utah advanced to its second NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance in school history last season and won the Mountain West Conference championship with a 14-2 conference record after ending the league slate with 14 consecutive victories.
Utah was also selected to repeat as champions in the MWC's Preseason Coaches Poll voted on earlier this week by a panel including the nine league head coaches and selected media. In addition, junior opposite hitter Karolina Bartkowiak was named to the Preseason All-MWC Team.
The Utes take on a pair of opponents ranked in the top-20, including a road contest at No. 20 Santa Clara Sept. 12 and a match against No. 14 Oregon at Crimson Court. The Utes will also face Cal Poly, Colorado State, and Long Beach State, who were each listed as receiving votes in the poll.
The Utes open the 2009 season against Arizona State on Friday, Aug. 28, in the Utah Classic.
