ALBUQUERQUE -The Utes outhit the Lobos .168 to .144 and three players registered at least 10 kills but the University of Utah volleyball team fell in four sets to New Mexico, 3-1 (14-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23), in a Mountain West Conference match Saturday at the Johnson Center.
Utah (10-11, 5-3 MWC) managed to hold its fourth consecutive opponent to a hitting percentage under .200 (.144), while going for a .168 hitting percentage on the attack. The Utes outblocked the Lobos during the match, 14-9.
Erin Redd led Utah with 15 kills on 30 swings and only two attack errors for a .433 hitting percentage. Redd also turned in four blocks.
Karolina Bartkowiak pitched in 13 kills to the Ute attack as she attained 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the season and the 19th of her career.
Morgan Odale added 10 kills for her seventh double-digit-kill match of the season and also came up with seven digs and four blocks.
Four different Utes turned in 10 or more digs against the Lobos, led by 20 from Keisha Fisher. This was the fifth time she had turned in 20 or more digs in a single match this season. Fisher has collected 1,436 career digs and now finds herself 157 short of tying the school record.
Freshman Charlee Dyroff registered 15 digs for her third double-digit-dig output this season. Dyroff was followed by Bartkowiak and setter Stephanie Neeley.
As a setter, Neeley dished out her 42 assists and also dug up 12 digs to record her 25th career double-double and 11th this season. Neeley now has 2,403 career assists, which stands fifth in school history.
Defensively at the net, Danielle Killpack turned in a team-high and season-high-tying eight blocks, recording four block solos and four block assists. She also turned in six kills and one dig.
Utah took six of the first seven points of the set and that stretch set the tone for the Utes. Utah would lead by no fewer than two points for the remainder of the set and would close the first portion on an 11-3 run to take a 25-14 first-set victory. The Utes limited the Lobos to a -.062 hitting percentage while going for a .152 clip on the attack. Odale tallied four kills during the set while Odale and Killpack both came up with three blocks during the opener.
The second set was tied seven times with the final occurrence being at 10 points apiece before the Lobos went on an 8-3 run to take control of the set en route to a 25-18 second-set win. Utah hit .256 in the second set but yielded a .455 mark to New Mexico.
The third set followed in similar fashion, the teams were tied at nine points apiece before going on a 6-2 stretch to assume a 15-11 lead. The Lobos were able to hold on for a 25-23 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Lobos clinched the match with a 25-23 in the fourth set as the Utes held UNM to a .170 hitting mark throughout the set but were only able to muster a .154 mark themselves.
New Mexico (13-8, 5-3 MWC) also had three players hit over 10 kills, led by a team-high 15 kills by Lisa Meeter. Kelly Williamson turned in 14 kills while Ashley Rhoades pounded 12.
The Utes host a Deseret First Duel match against BYU on Friday. First serve from Crimson Court is set for 7:30 p.m. MT, and the match will be televised live on The Mtn.
