SALT LAKE CITY - All three members of the Ute senior class --- Karolina Bartkowiak, Keisha Fisher and Stephanie Neeley --- achieved a milestone in their final appearance at Crimson Court on Saturday as the University of Utah volleyball team earned a four-set victory over TCU (25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15).
Utah (15-14, 9-5 MWC) outhit TCU, .279 to .106 and earned an 11-7 edge in team blocks for the match.
"We were all ready to play and excited for today," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "It was an emotional match for us today and it's been an emotional weekend knowing that this celebration was coming up. We made it about our seniors today and getting this win.
"It really was a team effort, but at one point there was Neeley's 3,000th assist, then Bartkowiak got into the school's top-10 list for kills, and then Keisha became the all-time dig leader five minutes later. That was a special moment for our team and for our seniors."
Fisher registered a team-high-tying 19 digs and is now the all-time digs leader in Utah history with 1,576 career digs. Fisher also dished out four assists against the Horned Frogs. She has 466 digs this season, which stands third in school history, and needs 19 more to break Connie Dangerfield's single-season record (484 in 2007).
Bartkowiak moved into 10th place on the school's all-time kills list with 13 kills on 29 attempts for a .310 hitting percentage. She now has 1,097 career kills and is 13 away from taking ninth place in school history, ahead of Debbie Gibby-Smith (1989-92). Defensively, she dug up 16 TCU attack attempts to record her 14th double-double this season and the 26th of her career. She also added four blocks.
Neeley joined Utah's 3,000-assist club after distributing 49 against TCU. The Saugus, Calif., native has distributed 3,016 assists over her career. This was the 14th time this season that she has surpassed the 40-assist plateau. She also tied Fisher for team-high honors with 19 digs against the Horned Frogs to earn her 30th career double-double, the 16th of her career.
"I didn't think about those milestones before," Launiere said. "I knew about Keisha's record and I knew they were moving up the career charts, but it's really special that they were all able to do this afternoon."
Morgan Odale was one of four Utes who hit double-figures in kills. Odale paced the Ute attack with 16 kills on 36 attempts with two errors for a .389 mark. She completed her second consecutive double-double, the ninth of her career, by gathering 11 digs.
Erin Redd turned in 14 kills on 29 swings with only a pair of errors for a match-high .500 hitting percentage. At the net, Redd contributed four blocks.
Brooke McAlister turned in 10 kills and was also credited with four digs and one block.
Junior Danielle Killpack came up with a match-high eight blocks to go with eight kills on the attack.
"We played very well today," Launiere said. "We were a little shaky on the serve in the first set and then we settled down. We didn't miss many serves after that and we passed the ball well. We also blocked the ball well and played good defense. Overall, we played a good match."
The first set was tied twice before Utah went on a 5-1 run to assume a 9-5 edge. Utah extended its lead to as many as nine points (22-13) and then held off a TCU spurt late in the set to take a 25-19 victory to open the match. The Utes never trailed in the set and Bartkowiak led the way offensively with five kills while Odale had four. Fisher turned in five digs as the Utes outhit the Horned Frogs in the set, 455 to .320, and managed a 4-3 advantage in team blocks.
The Utes overwhelmed the Horned Frogs early in the second set by taking the first nine points and maintained their nine-point lead until the set was 18-9. TCU managed to trim its deficit to five points at 22-17 via a 5-2 run but Utah closed strong by taking the final three points of the set for a 25-17 second-set victory. McAlister registered six kills in the frame as Utah outhit TCU, .217 to .081. Fisher earned four more digs in the back row and the Utes outblocked the Frogs, 4-2.
Utah improved to 5-0 this season when winning the first two sets of a match.
Utah scored seven of the opening 10 points in the third set in what turned out to be a back-and-forth affair that featured 10 ties and five lead changes. TCU came back with four consecutive points to force the second tie of the set at seven points apiece. The set would be tied five more times (at 11, 15, 17, 18, 19) before a pair of Odale kills gave Utah a 21-19 advantage. Unfortunately, TCU came back to knot the set for the eighth time at 23-23 and kills by Kristy Hudson and Jordan Raines gave TCU a 25-23 edge. Odale turned in five kills on 10 swings and Utes outhit the Horned Frogs in the set, .220 to .146, but were outblocked, 2-0.
The Utes started with a 6-2 lead in the fourth set and led by as many as 10 points (20-10) and cruised to a victory in the decisive fourth set by the same margin, 25-15. McAlister and Redd registered four kills apiece to help the Utes outhit TCU, .364 to .065.
TCU (13-15, 4-10 MWC) was led by a team-high 12 kills from Irene Hester. Christy Hudson joined her in double-digits in kills with 10 on 26 attempts without an attack error.
The Utes conclude their regular-season with a pair of matches next week, beginning Wednesday at Colorado State. First serve from Moby Arena is set for 7 p.m. MT.
