COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Four Utah student-athletes - Karolina Bartkowiak, Keisha Fisher, Erin Redd and Morgan Odale - were named to the 2010 all-Mountain West Conference Volleyball Team while Odale was selected as the Freshman of the Year, the league office announced today.
"To have four players named to the all-MWC team is a tribute to the season we had," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "We finished strong with the big win over Colorado State in the last weekend of MWC play."
Bartkowiak, a senior from Aurora, Ill., earned her third consecutive all-conference nod. This season, she ranked ninth in the MWC with 2.96 kills per set and a .288 hitting percentage. In conference play, she finished eighth with 1.11 blocks per set and a .312 hitting percentage and was listed ninth with 3.75 points per set.
Bartkowiak finished her career ninth in school history with 1,115 career kills and became the 12th member of Utah's 1,000-kill club during a season-high 19 kill-performance against BYU on Oct. 29. `Barto' also tied her season high with seven blocks against the Cougars, while her other seven-block performance came at Air Force on Nov. 11. She was named the MWC Player of the Week twice this season on Sept. 7 and Nov.1 and five times over her career. Bartkowiak recorded double-doubles in 14 of 31 matches this season and 26 times over her career.
"`Barto' became one of the premier players in the MWC during her career at Utah," Launiere said. "To be honored three times in a career says a lot about her consistency and overall great performances through the years".
Fisher was recognized as the co-designated libero after recording 498 digs this season, a mark that passed Connie Dangerfield's single-season school record (484 in 2007). Fisher led the MWC with 4.26 digs per set in all matches and averaged 4.23 digs per set during league play, which was second in the conference.
Fisher ends her Ute career as the school-record holder with 1,608 career digs in three seasons as the full-time starter at libero. She finished her career with 88 double-digit dig matches, including 27 this season. Fisher recorded eight 20-plus dig matches, including a season-high 27 against Morehead State and at San Diego, which was the second-highest four-set single-match total in the MWC this season. Fisher led or tied for the team high in digs 25 times this year. She also had an impact with her serve, tripling her previous career high with six service aces against UNLV on Oct. 31.
"Keisha established herself both as a great defensive player and passer at Utah," Launiere said. "She deserves this recognition as one of the best in the MWC as well".
Redd, a freshman from Spanish Fork, Utah, joined Bartkowiak and Fisher on the all-MWC team after finishing second in the MWC with a .354 hitting percentage and was second place in the conference-only stats with a .368 clip in league matches. She managed to hit over .500 eight times and over .400 16 times, while leading Utah to the second-highest hitting percentage in the conference. Redd clinched third on the team with 2.40 kills per set and recorded at least 10 kills in 13 matches. She also ranked third on the team with a 0.85 block-per-set average.
Redd posted a season-high .692 hitting percentage at Air Force on Nov. 11 as well as a .562 percentage against the Falcons on Oct. 16. She hit 16 kills at Arizona State on Sept. 18 and had her first career double-figure-kill match, with 13, against Michigan on Sept. 18. She led or tied for team-high honors in blocks eight times and kills twice. Defensively, Redd came up with a season-high six blocks on three occasions, against Utah Valley (Aug. 31), San Diego (Oct. 7), and UNLV (Nov. 13).
"Erin really came on as the year progressed and grew into a premier middle blocker in the MWC," Launiere said. "We're excited about how good she can become with more training and experience. Her potential is unlimited."
Odale earned the MWC Freshman of the Year award after finishing in the MWC's top 10 in six different statistical categories. She finished second in the conference-only stats with 0.34 service aces per set and was seventh with 3.15 kills per set and 3.81 points per set. In the overall statistics, she finished fifth with 3.88 points per set, sixth in kills (3.25/set) and ninth in service aces (0.26/set).
Odale managed to hit double-digits in kills 24 times in the first season of her career, recording nine double-doubles and leading or tying for the team lead in kills 14 times. She compiled a career-high 22 kills at Arizona State on Sept. 18 and hit 19 kills three times: at BYU (Oct. 1), against Missouri St. (Sept. 11) and versus Utah Valley (Aug. 31). Her season-high .429 hitting (12-0-28) percentage came at Air Force on Nov. 11. She was also selected to the 2010 Utah Classic, Northwestern Challenge and Mary Jo Wynn Invitational All-Tournament teams.
"Morgan was an all-around force for us as evidenced by being in the top 10 of three MWC statistical categories. Being the only freshman in the top 10 in these areas led to her Freshman of the Year award," Launiere said. "We're enthusiastic about the future for Morgan as she will just keep getting better and better."
