The Utes limited the Aztecs to one service ace over the entire match, while serving four of their own. McAlister served a match-high two aces to pace the Ute service attack.
San Diego State won the first point of the match, but Utah would never trail again in the set. Bartkowiak had four kills and Fisher registered five digs as the Utes outhit the Aztecs .300 to .051 in the set.
The tables would turn in the second set as Utah never could gain the advantage and with the exception of a 1-1 tie, would trail for most of the way. The Aztecs took six of the first nine points at the beginning of the set and would lead by as many as six points, the last instance coming at 23-17. The Utes found themselves down 22-17 before putting together a 7-1 stretch to take a 24-23 lead. Unfortunately, SDSU earned the next three points to take a 26-24 victory. Bartkowiak turned in four more kills and Neeley and Fisher both collected five digs apiece.
"Whenever you are prepared going into a match, you can respond better," Launiere said. "But if you don't feel prepared then adversity turns into panic. We were prepared and we were able to respond."
The Utes stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the beginning of the third set. Utah would extend its advantage to as many as 11 points, initially at 23-12. The Utes would never trail in the set and went on to claim a 25-16 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. Utah outhit SDSU .500 to .286 in the set and held a 2-0 advantage in team blocks. In what would turn out to be a back-and-forth affair, the teams would be tied nine more times. Utah was able to take the next three points, 17-14, and go on to a 25-21 match-clinching victory. Bartkowiak and Redd each slammed down four kills while Neeley set up the Ute attack with 15 assists in the finale.
