Utah Head Coach Jim Boylen
"It was a little bit of what I thought it would be. We have talent, we have elevated the talent level. I thought we struggled in the first half sharing the ball. I thought we all we wanted to do it ourselves at times, which new teams do sometimes. I thought we made a point of emphasis at halftime to come out punch the ball to the post, which I thought we did, and share the ball more. And I thought that was the difference in the game. I thought their speed and quickness would hurt us going in, and it did. They ran out on us in transition."
"We had 19 offensive rebounds, I don't know when the last time we had that. It was a point of emphasis for us to rebound the ball better and get extra possession. Will Clyburn is an offensive rebounding machine. But when we send four to the boards, now you have to get your butt back. They exploited that, which I think is a great learning lesson for us. I love the fact we shot 39 free-throws. Aggressive style of play, four to the boards, earn more free-throws, run the ball more, earn free throws."
"We had a lot of lessons in this game, a lot of things to learn. I am encouraged again by our talent level. You can see David coming back will help that. And we still have to improve. I have a lot to coach, we have a lot to coach in the next couple of weeks to get this team to where it needs to go. But I do like that we can score the ball and we have improved talent on this team. What have these last three weeks been like for you?"
Sophomore center Jason Washburn
Thoughts on the game:
"Well I think obviously we've got a lot of work to do, we made a lot of mistakes out there. We need to learn how to finish games, but I think we showed how good this team can be. Everyone was so anxious to see a lot of our new guys, [Watkins and Clyburn] especially on the offensive end. We saw a glimpse of how good we can really be. That was a tough team, down by 14 and still never stopped. But we have to learn how to finish games, right up to the last five seconds."
On bringing the new players into the system:
"It hasn't been much of a challenge. These guys came in and they learned the system and accepted it when we corrected them, but at the same time they stepped up and they were leaders also. We saw [Josh Watkins] make a lot of good plays and when we needed a rebound, Clyburn especially was in there. It hasn't been much of a challenge, but like I said there are still a lot of things we need to work on. I think we have melded well, we just need to clean ourselves up a little bit and there is no limit to how good we can be."
Junior guard Josh Watkins
Thoughts on the game:
"It was good, obviously a still work in progress. But like coach said, we are getting better every day and we have a lot of work still left to do. As time goes by we will be much better. We just have to correct our mistakes. We will be at it again tomorrow."
How hungry is this team?
"All the guys that have been here, they say that they really want it. We just have to match their intensity. They have all helped us, and I thank them for that."
Junior wing Will Clyburn
"I just came out to play hard and just hit the glass like coach told me to do at the beginning of the game."
"For the first half, we weren't moving the ball like we should. Second half we talked in the locker room about getting more to the open guys and sharing the ball well."
On the transition from Junior College
"It's been tough. The coaches have been on me every single day about making the transition from Juco to here, especially on my defense. They are on me every single day, they just keep telling me to try to match the intensity. Every night you have to bring it or you're going to be left in the dust."
Adams State Head Coach Louis Wilson
"Utah was a handful because they have a lot of talented new players. (Will) Clyburn and (Josh) Watkins are both outstanding players. They are going to be really good down the road. There were so many new people, and they hurt us. My guys played really hard though. We have 17 new players in our system, and a new coach. I thought our effort was good, but it wasn't always smart. Defensively, we gave too much away in the paint. Utah is a very talented (team)."
" I don't think anyone stood out from our team. We have a lot of new guys. It's a new system, a new way of playing, with a new coach and 17 guys who just met each other three months ago. I was pleased with some efforts, but not completely satisfied. Jason West in the first half played well. He was active and performed really well. He and Marquis Richards caused Utah some issues. Wilson is a better shooter than he showed tonight but we were asking him to do things where he had to adjust. Our point guards defensively could have played better. But they played against a very talented point guard in Watkins, who is an astounding player. Clyburn is a heck of a player, too.
"I like our group. I feel good about them. I think we'll be good at some point in the year, I just don't know when. I'm impressed with Utah and I really like the effort my guys gave out. This is our first time playing anybody other than ourselves in practice. I'm not disappointed but we have a long way to go. "
"We're going to have to be better than we were tonight, and we will be by the time we get to conference play. But there are a lot of things that we can hang our hat on: we are quick, athletic and we are versatile in that we have a lot of different players that can play multiple positions. I think we are going to defend better than we did in the second half of tonight's game. We caused them some problems in the first half. When you're playing a quality team like Utah on the road, you can't make mistakes and we made a lot of them."
