SALT LAKE CITY - Junior wing Will Clyburn turned in 23 points with 13 rebounds to help the University of Utah men's basketball team (6-2) to a 67-60 win over Pepperdine (3-7) Tuesday in a non-conference game at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah improved to 5-0 this season when holding its opponents under 41% shooting as Pepperdine registered 37.1% (13-of-35) from the field. Defensively, Utah came up with a season-high 12 steals. The Utes also dished out 15 assists as a team, which finished just one shy of tying their season high.
The Utes played with an increased tempo throughout the game with 21 fast-break points, compared to just six for the Waves. Utah's previous season high in the category was six. The Utes picked up the pace in the second half and gained an 11-0 edge over Pepperdine.
Clyburn registered his second consecutive double-double, and his third on the year, with 23 points on an 8-for-13 performance from the floor. His eight made field goals was a career high. He has scored 20-plus points in six of eight games this season, including three of the last four. Clyburn also distributed a career-high four assists. Defensively, Clyburn came up with a career high seven steals to tie Andre Miller for second place on the school's all-time single-game list. Miller recorded seven steals versus Fresno State on Jan. 25, 1999.
Jason Washburn poured in a season-high 13 points on an efficient 5-of-6 effort from the floor. He also grabbed eight rebounds and was credited with three blocks.
Josh Watkins dished out a career-high-tying six assists but had his seven-game double-digit point streak snapped with a nine-point effort.
Chris Kupets set a new career high with two 3-pointers for a total of eight points. Kupets also tied his career high with three assists.
Junior center David Foster had four blocks and now has 143 over his career. He is now 14 shy of tying Mitch Smith's second-place mark of 157, set from 1985-59.
After giving up the first basket of the game, Utah went on a 7-2 run and would lead by as many as four points (12-8) before Pepperdine put together a 7-2 spurt of its own to grab a 15-14 lead. The Utes answered with five unanswered to regain a four-point edge (19-15). The Waves trailed 26-20 but headed into the intermission with a 29-26 lead thanks to a 9-0 run. Clyburn neared a double-double with 11 points on a 4-of-8 effort from the field to go with nine rebounds. Clyburn's half included a 3-of-5 performance from 3-point range. Chris Hines added five points while Shawn Glover had four.
This was the first time Utah was behind at halftime and came back to win.
The Waves' lead grew to five (33-28) at the start of the second half but the Utes came back with five consecutive points, including a dunk on a 3-point play by Washburn, to force the first tie of the half (35-35). There would be four more ties before back-to-back 3-pointers by Kupets fueled a 10-2 spurt that opened up an eight-point lead for the Utes. Utah would lead by as many as 10 points (63-53) before clinching a 67-60 victory.
Pepperdine was led by 17 points by Keion Bell. Joshua Lowery also poured in 10 points. Taylor Darby turned in a team-high 10 rebounds.
Utah takes on Big Ten Conference opponent Michigan on Saturday. Tipoff from Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich., is set for 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on the Big 10 Network (Comcast - 403; DirecTV - 610; DISH Network - 439).
