COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Tia Palauni, a sophomore second baseman on the University of Utah softball team, was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Palauni, from Taylorsville, Utah, batted .538 (7-for-13) from the plate last week, with three home runs, 11 RBI and six runs scored, as the Utes went 5-0 at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah.
In an 8-0 win over San Jose State on Friday, Palauni went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, one RBI, one run scored and one stolen base. In the Utes' 6-5 win over Northern Colorado the same day, she went 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.
Saturday against Idaho State, Palauni went 2-for-2 with three RBI, one run scored and one stolen base in Utah's 5-3 win over the Bengals. In Utah's 9-1 victory over Seattle, Palauni went 2-for-4 with two homers, six RBI and two runs scored.
Defensively, she tallied 12 putouts and six assists with only one error from the second base position over the weekend.
The Utes head west to the Louisville Slugger Classic this weekend, beginning Friday at 11:15 a.m. PT against No. 12/11 California.
