Junior Brooke Olson Leads Deep and Talented Crew of Utah Catchers:
After making 38 starts as either the designated player or catcher while hitting .305 during the 2009 season, junior Brooke Olson returns for her second season with the Utes.
"[Olson] is clearly our starting catcher right now," Utah third-year head coach Amy Hogue said. "She is a great offensive threat and she's as strong as I've ever seen her. The ball started to fly out of the park a lot more this fall."
Freshman Alyssa Garcia will initially serve as the backup and then challenge for the starting opportunity once she reaches full strength from a leg injury.
"[Garcia] is really athletic," Hogue said. "She stepped in and hit well this fall so we will also give her an opportunity at first base."
Catcher Notes:
Brooke Olson
Jr. ? C ? R/R ? 5-7 ? Bluffdale, Utah ? Salt Lake Community College
Expected to be Utah's starting catcher ... has been battling shoulder pain ... started 38 games, mostly as designated player, in 2009 ... improved strength during offseason and was hitting for more power during fall practice.
Alyssa Garcia
Fr. ? C/1B ? R/R ? 5-6 ? Houston, Texas ? MacArthur H.S.
Talented catcher with a very lively arm ... will also work at first base ... has an extraordinary amount of raw talent ... a good fit for Utah in a number of ways: a talented athlete and a great student who aspires to be a doctor.
