COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Utah soccer team opened its spring exhibition season with a split of its road trip to Texas last weekend. The squad defeated Sam Houston State in the morning half of a Saturday double-header, 1-0, then fell to Texas A&M in the night game, 3-0.
Sophomore forward Erin Dalley, a first-team All-MWC selection last year, netted Utah's goal against SHSU approximately 12 minutes into the game. Freshman forward Hanna Terry got the assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen was credited with the shutout win. Utah had several other scoring opportunities, including shots from freshman forward Monica Okapal and junior forward Lauren Hair, that were kept out by good efforts from the SHSU goalkeeper.
Against Texas A&M, all three goals the Utes allowed came off of set pieces, including a penalty kick, a corner and a 25-yard free kick.
"The most important thing about this weekend was that the team saw its hard work start to pay off," said Manning. "They have been making strides in a lot of areas during spring practice and I think the team left the weekend feeling pretty encouraged. Based on the fact that it is only March, I thought our fitness level was great, our teamwork was very good and by the end of the day, our ball movement was strong.
"Not allowing a goal in the run of play was a definite positive for us," Manning continued. "But giving up three on set pieces was another hard lesson for this team to learn from. We have to realize that we can't give up fouls in dangerous areas and our set piece defending has to continue to improve. The good thing is that our players see that and are committed to getting it fixed."
Utah gets back into action Saturday, April 10, as the team heads to Provo, Utah, to face BYU and Utah State.
