SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team will face a challenging slate of opponents in 2010, including seven teams that made last year's NCAA Tournament field, according to the schedule released Thursday by head coach Rich Manning.
"Utah soccer has ambitious goals and we need to challenge ourselves in order to be in a position to reach them," said Manning. "Our non-conference schedule is designed to help us get better and be ready for Mountain West Conference play. With tournaments at Washington State, Georgia and Santa Clara, we will be facing some of the best in the country and we'll be battle-tested come October and November. Ute fans will get to see some excellent teams from the WCC, Conference USA and the Pac-10."
Utah's non-conference opponents include 2009 NCAA Tournament participants Washington State, Georgia and Santa Clara on the road, while facing tournament competitors Oregon State at home and Stanford on a neutral field.
The Utes will open the season at the Cougar Classic on Aug. 20 with a neutral-site game against Gonzaga before taking on tournament host Washington State Aug. 22. Utah will then head to the Georgia Tournament the following weekend to face the Bulldogs on Aug. 27 and UNC Greensboro on Aug. 29.
Utah's first home games will be Sept. 3 against Loyola Marymount and Sept. 5 against Saint Mary's. Utah's other non-conference opponents include in-state rival Weber State (away, Sept. 9), Colorado College (home, Sept. 12), in-state foe Utah State (home, Sept. 23), and Pac-10 power Arizona (away, Sept. 26).
The Utes open MWC play at Air Force on Oct. 1. Their first conference home game will be against Wyoming on Oct. 8, before the team hits the road for away games at New Mexico and TCU. Utah closes out the regular season with three consecutive league games at home, hosting San Diego State (Oct. 21), UNLV (Oct. 23) and rival BYU (Oct. 30).
"The MWC race will be very tight with several teams benefitting from valuable experience gained in 2009," said Manning. "Our home games with SDSU, UNLV and BYU will be during the heart of the conference title race and should be thrillers."
The MWC Tournament will be held Nov. 3-6 at San Diego State.
Utah is currently midway through its spring exhibition schedule with a record of 2-1, including shutout victories over Sam Houston State and Westminster. The Utes are back in spring action Saturday, April 10, as they head to Provo to face BYU.
"Our young team from last fall is growing up fast," added Manning. "We've been tirelessly working this spring and one of the driving forces has been the quality of competition we are going to face in our 2010 season. We can't wait to get started and invite fans to come and join us at Ute Field. It's only April and we are already looking toward August with great enthusiasm and anticipation. We invite all Utah fans to join us at Ute Field this fall."
