SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team is now in its second week of preseason training camp at Ute Field. The team completed its fifth day of two-a-day workouts Tuesday with an intra-squad scrimmage. The Utes are preparing for their season-opening contest against Gonzaga on Aug. 20 at the Cougar Classic tournament in Pullman, Wash.
UtahUtes.com caught up with head coach Rich Manning and some of the players following Monday's afternoon training session.
Head Coach Rich Manning:
"I've been pretty pleased so far, I really like the competitive spirit in this group. We have already faced a lot of challenges with injuries but our coaches and trainers are doing a great job of getting our players as healthy as possible. This has been the most challenging start to a season injury-wise that I have see during my nine years at Utah. There have been a lot of things that could throw us off course early, but our group has stayed determined and done a good job.
"This team's willingness to work hard and approach training camp with a winning attitude has been great and I think that will come out when we begin to play games. Our players have a lot of energy to focus toward winning.
"So far we have been focused on implementing our defensive principles and building up our individual skill. Now as we move on to larger group scrimmages, our focus will start to shift toward the offense."
Senior captain, forward Lauren Hair:
"I thought I might be happy that it was my last training camp but it also feels weird. I kind of feel like a freshman again, I'm ready to get going and get playing. I don't think I will approach this preseason camp any differently, I just tried to come to camp in shape and ready to go. I might have a little more fire and urgency, but I just want to play as hard as I can.
"I think we are moving forward really well, this has been a good camp so far. Some of the newer players have been coming up to me and the other captains and asking a lot of questions because it's so new, but every time we get out on the field to practice we are getting better and continuing to jell.
"The worst part about preseason camp is running shuttles...the best part is being able to play soccer all day!"
Junior captain, defender Lauren Porter:
"I think preseason is going well so far. We are working very hard and there has been a great competitive atmosphere. I think our team chemistry is good, we are quickly learning to read each other's game. [Assistant coach Ryan Crabbe] has reconfigured our positions a little bit on defense so we are getting more comfortable with them. I think the returning players have gotten in a good rhythm pretty quickly.
"I want to approach training camp with a little more of a leadership role this year and just keep trying to be a good teammate.
"My least favorite part of training camp is running shuttles. The best part is all the snacks in the locker room."
Freshman defender Harley Spier:
"My first training camp has been hard but fun. There is a lot more to learn than I thought there would be. It's a lot more demanding that high school, the speed of play is a lot faster and it's more competitive, but we are getting used to it. I've been a little frustrated trying to learn a new position, but it's getting better.
"I feel like everyone is coming together well. Coming in early to practice together on our own before preseason started really helped with that.
"I actually love training camp. My favorite part is learning new things and new positions. And I was really happy to finish my shuttles so well yesterday."
