PULLMAN, Wash. - The University of Utah soccer team (0-2) fell at Washington State (1-1-0) Sunday at the Cougar Classic by a 1-0 score. Sophomore forward Erin Dalley was the Utes top offensive threat for the second straight game, taking four of the team's nine shots.
"I thought our effort and competitiveness was very good," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "We fought tooth and nail. It was even game and really could have gone either way, and a lot of positives came out of it. We got some good information from the weekend and I think a lot of players improved. Now we need to get back to training and get ready for next weekend."
The game remained scoreless until the 74th minute, when Tiara Pittman headed in a pass from Shannon McFadden. The Utes' best opportunity to pull the game level came with about 30 seconds left, when junior defender Lauren Dudley got a shot off from the top of the box, but it was blocked away by a Cougar defender.
Utah junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made six saves in the contest, while Meghan Berlingo made four in the net for WSU. The Utes were outshot 11-9 overall, and the Cougars took six corner kicks to Utah's four.
The Utes are back in action Friday, Aug. 27, at the Georgia tournament in Athens, Ga. Utah faces the host Bulldogs at 5 p.m. MT. They will then take on UNC-Greensboro Sunday at 9 a.m. MT in a neutral-site contest.
